my 96 landcruiser has a COMBINATION u-joint. both outer and inner clips

I hope I am able to post pics or a link to pics. this is the front propeller shaft and the u-joint is the rear joint at the transfer case. as you can see, the caps that attach to the drive shaft are outer clips and the caps that attach to the transfer case are inner clips.

has anyone else had a landcruiser with this arrangement?

this particular u-joint needs replacement bad and I am worried that I am going to get the wrong part. if anyone has been in the same situation as I am, what part did you use? I am hoping that moog 285 can work, because that is what I told my brother-in-law to order for me. the moog 285 has all inner clips

any advise would be most appreciated.

This is just a guess, but possibly, the cups on the DS side were loose so a shop used cups from another U joint to make it work, or replaced the DS end with another yoke.. I have a front DS, and I replaced the joints, and the cups could spin in the pockets. I'd price a replacement DS from MUD or cruiser parts. The price might not be too high, and not worth trying to resolve that puzzle. My first impression is that the DR yoke doesn't look right. It doesn't match the profile of the TC yoke.

I don't think you'll know until you remove at least the DS side clips whether there is a recess for the clips to engage. Are you sure there are not clip on the inside too?

Kind of hard to tell from the pic, but one side appears to be normal with inner clips. I can't tell by the other side.

My 2 cents for what it's worth, i have toasted tons of ujoints from NAPA, auto zone, oreilly. In my opinion this is one part that Toyota is superior on and i would go back with OEM u-joints. I speak from experience.

Anyway to post another picture? Perhaps at this point it might be best just to drop the shaft and remove the u-joints to see exactly what you are dealing with.
