My new (to me) 87 XJ

Picked up an 87 XJ Limited on Sunday. Good timing, I'd say as Monday we got our first winter storm :). Nothing too special, but I picked it up for $1200 and it's pretty solid. Has a rebuilt 4.0l, rebuilt transfer case, most of the front end components have been replaced, 3" rough country lift, like new 31" A/Ts. Body is in pretty good shape minus a dent in the driver's back door, and interior is nice minus the previous owner cutting holes in the door panels too large for the speakers. Overall I'm happy with it, runs and drives really well (knock on wood), and the 4WD seems to work well also. Came with a folder full of documentation and receipts, which is always nice! It's going to spend alot of time in the mountains, so I will mainly adapt if for mountain terrain, snow, and equip it for extended self contained camping trips.

Only picture I have two pictures I have for now are snow covered parking lot pictures..Better pictures in the next few days to follow.

Congrats, looks nice. I'm strongly contemplating selling my current DD and looking for a later XJ or a 99-04WJ as my new DD.

They make good DD's if you don't get too carried away. This is my 3rd XJ, last one had 6.5" lift, too much for my taste..Sticking with 3" on this one.

XJ's make great DD or winter beaters (depending on how you look at it, and the condition of the XJ:elkgrin:)

My '99 has 6" lift, but in the winter, I replace the 33" tires with 235/75R snow tires:smiley_drive:

Makes the winter driving much better, albeit, the XJ looks kindy funny with that much lift and stock tires:snorkel:

This is my 3rd XJ, and the only one I modified. The first two, both '86's, were great in the winter.

I drove the 2.8L V-6 one out to Portland, OR from MN, in January, for 4 months of work.

Other than a serious lack of power (the 2.8L were doggy) it handled the snow great!

Congrats on your new XJ!

yuck ! I see those V6 XJ's and just cringe...it just looks wrong.
my 01 XJ on 245/75/16 is wayyy better in the snow than my 93 on 34's !!

The early(pre86) XJs with the V6 can be easily replaced with a 4.3L Chevy V6 and will then outperform most 4.0L straight 6s.

I am on several different Jeep forums and even a moderator on a few and my area of expertise is the Renix years (87-90) so shoot me a PM if you need help with those year XJs.

I have an 88 with 3" lift, 31x10.50s, 280K miles roughly about equal to 5 times the mileage my sister ever got out of her Disco engines... Good all around DD.

Great Jeeps, I just bought and had one mildly spruced up for my nephew. I would do it myself, but no time for me to spend in the garage. This was an 88 limited with the gold package, and 210,000 miles on it. The thing runs so well. We removed all stickers and molding, put a 2" bb with shocks, some 255x70x16's on my old 5.9L rims, replaced rear main. Still need to put the Yakima rack on there. It's a 4.0L with the 242 t-case.... Only one problem... It turned out so well, that my B-in-law, his Dad, has fallen for the 'ol girl. He been driving it everyday, since my nephew is just 15, and spends a week at a time with him, then a week with his mother (yes divorced). I think I might have to do this again next year for my nephew's 16th b-day. That 'ol Jeep bug bites ya hard!

Replaced all the fuel injectors, and put all newer style decals on it. Looks great! I need to get some updated pics on here of it.
