My Trailer Build Write-Up (a few months old)

Hey folks, I've been registered here for a little bit but haven't visited as much. (that will change).

Some of you from other sites may have seen this already, but if you haven't, I built my expedition trailer back in April. I've hit a few trips with it already and have found some improvements that need to be made (such as the inexpensive Moombasa tent mounts and I am getting rid of the pintle for a non-rattle type). But all in all, she turned out really well and is really stable cruising down the road.

My plans shortly are adding some water cans via Equipt, and re-enforcing the tongue (to be on the safe side).

Enjoy the article! -----> http://www.wildyoats.com/off_road_trailer_build.htm

Hey Johnny, nice to see you here - :beer:

Quick hikack, do you still have that early '80's mini that you grafted the xcab to? That one was an inspiration when I had my '85 and just a slick all around buggy.

Nice trailer build. Good to know of a deputy around PC, in case I ever crash on Parley's Summit.

Johnny, may I ask about the tent mount? What part? The lovely washboards on the Altar-Sasabe road managed to kick one of my towers loose from the pad. Nothing detrimental happened, I just popped it back in, but it left me wondering how in the world that tower came unlatched.

Same issue with you, or something different?

Thanks,
Mark

No idea about UT, but in OR it would qualify as small enough to not need a plate.

In UT, as long as you have lights and the trailer is under 750#, no plate required.
BUT if you want to insure the trariler you need to have it registared.

KCOWYO-
You remember ol green eh? :wings: Nope, she is long gone. I listed her up on Ebay and someone from WA state came and bought her. Some months later I received a call from BOSTON PD or something like that, they had impounded it and it still had my Utah plates on it so they contacted me. I had to fax them a release so the kid could get it out of impound. Where she is now, I don't know.

ARTICULATE-

The mounts ALL broke off on the bottom of the tent. I hit a really bad wash board road. Why I stopped when I did I don't know. It was 11pm at night, I was trying to located a group in the woods, and something told me to check it out. Literally another 100 feet and I would have lost the tent. ALL of the four C-type channel mounts sheared right off. What it boiled down to is poor rivets. Way to small for the job. I reinstalled them with larger rivets later. That night was interesting though, plenty of ratchet straps kept the wife and I from flipping over! :D

See, exactly. When duct tape fails, use a ratchet strap.
