Hello (Van) World-

We just became the owners of our first full-size van. We are going from a 2005 Chrysler T&C minivan to a 1998 Ford E-350 Hi-Top in order to pull a travel trailer around the country for a year. Our family is me, my long-suffering wife, four kids, and a German Shepherd cross mutt that looks like a dingo.

1998 Ford E-350 Club Wagon
V10
135K miles

Planned upgrades:

4.10 ring & pinion
Class IV or V rear receiver hitch to get 10k towing capacity
Tach & Trans Temp gauge (off diagnostic port)
Front receiver hitch for carrying bikes
Classier interior (cedar paneling?) with interior storage in the hi-top
Seating for 10, preferably something that stows or at least folds down when there are only 6 of us
Exterior lighting front/right/rear
Interior lighting
On-board air
12V refrigerator/cooler

The pictures below are from the listing, I ended up paying $3950 for it. Thankfully the glass breaker/seatbelt cutter was already installed, so that is one expedition upgrade I don't have to do :victory: The toggle switch near it was for a powered retractable step. I guess at some point it failed, because the step is welded solid to the framerail :Wow1:

First order of business is tackling regular maintenance items:

Brakes, currently locks up the LF under hard braking
Alignment, pulls left and wanders
Shocks, what are the best out there for stock suspension?
Weatherstripping
Power locks don't work
Corroded rear A/C lines, can someone recover the refrigerant when they replace the lines?

Nice looking base for a build, when I started I order all new hoses, water pump, belts and shocks along with a lot of little items like plug wires and such it kept my cost down and they always come though with good grade parts and always make returns easy. Enjoy the journey!

Update, we performed the following in 2017:

New radiator to cure chronic overheating while towing
4.11 rear gears with TruTrac rear differential
Front receiver hitch
Rear receiver hitch
Bilstein shocks
Rebuilt front end with Moog components
ScanGauge II for monitoring engine/trans vitals

We then proceeded to pull a 29' travel trailer across America for the next six months. Lots of fun adventures visiting friends/family and exploring national parks. At the end of our adventure the V10 developed an awful rod knock so we parked Myrtle the Silver Turtle in our backyard for the next couple of years.

About a month ago we decided that we either needed to sell the van or fix it up. A 3000 mile roadtrip to visit family at Christmas provided an excellent deadline. Since that decision we have:

Installed remanufactured longblock V10 from Ford
Build 'roll-cage' structure to allow hanging hammocks inside the van
Built full-size bed platform in rear of the van
Built composting toilet
Installed new stereo DVD/CD player

The engine is running strong and we are almost ready to depart!

We have more upgrades planned over the winter:

Install furnace salvaged from a pop-up camper
Build basic kitchen setup
Water heater and outdoor shower
Beautify the interior so my wife likes it (paneling/shiplap/etc on the ceiling and walls)
Solar + battery for power when parked
Install Ford Transit seats for more flexible seating arrangements

The goal is to have a camping vehicle that is packed and ready to go at a moment's notice. Would like seating for 8 or 9 and sleeping for 6.
