National Geo - World in Focus contest link

Hmmmm, interesting. Says they only received 15,000 entries last year. So let's say they get 20-25,000 entries this year...that's pretty good odds I say. A 1 in 2800 chance to go home with at least a merit award.

Don't know if I am talented enough to take on even some guys from this forum, let alone 20,000 others...but what the hell...it's only $12 per entry, and I have a brand new 30D to put through it's paces. Maybe I'll enter more than once :)

All I will say is read the fine print very carefully and make sure you understand and agree to what you are doing when you submit.

I read through the rules line for line and didn't see anything that makes me worry or wonder...am I also not seeing something?

I read it and it looks okay, but in general, beware. I do tend to trust PDN though. I'm not trying to be alarmist, just know that most photo contests are rights grabs and that National Geographic has a pretty dirty track record when it comes to photographers rights, and many lawsuits.

Isn't it pretty much a given that whenever you submit photos to any contest, you surrender the rights to them?

No, not really. PDN has several contests throughout the year, as does Communication Arts and a few other industry pubs. These are just to generate attention for good photographers and new techniques and generally make it clear in the rules that you are granting the publication a license to use the image only in this issue or surrounding this contest.

Most contests from publishers like Rodale and Conde Naste tend to be rights grabs.
