Need a bit of help Re: Jeep Warranties

My niece has a 2023 2 dr Wrangler and is going to university in British Columbia.

Recently she had problems with the Jeep’s tranny, took it into the local Canadian Jeep dealer and, wait for it…was told that the standard US Jeep warranty was not valid in Canada!!!

That kind of ‘nope! not our problem’ response sounds so ridiculous that I have a hard time believing this is what she actually was told.

OTOH, maybe this is what the new Canadian response will be to Americans needing help, in reaction to the tariffs 🤔

So anyway, have any of you guys (with any ‘US made’ newer vehicles) ever heard of the US warranties an no bueño north of the 49th?

*I should mention that the Wrangler is otherwise within the warranty’s miles/years of use limits)

It's not new. Mercedes was the first. Then Ford then Stellantis. Can't use the other country's warranty anymore. I know because I was looking to purchase a US motorhome and in the past you just needed a recall letter etc to import. That's still the same but if you buy a brand new vehicle the warranty for the chassis bits (not MH part) is country specific. She's off to Bellingham I'm guessing.

it has been that way for years...I had a buddy who thought he got a good deal on a Canadian JK wrangler that he bought from a dealer in Portland and had major problems and he could not get it warrantied in the USA and he went up to Canada and being he got it registered in the US they denied warranty...

Thx for sharing your experiences guys,

This is quite a shock to learn about this and I wonder how many people realize that this ridiculous warrantee restriction applies to taking their vehicle into Canada!

There does not seem to be much justifiable logic (other than greed) to support denying US vehicle owners warranty coverage when their new-ish vehicle breaks down in Canada (especially since some of the rigs you buy in the US are made in Canada!).

In the past, I’ve foolishly traveled extensively around western Canada in different new pickups, always enjoying the peace of mind of thinking I’d easily get dealer warranty work done there if we had any breakdowns.

Glad I never found myself in the situation of needing that warranty work up there.

my understanding is if you are just traveling you will be covered. it is when you buy a car in the us or canada and then register it in the other country you lose your warranty. I think if you are on vacation you should be covered and at the worst once you get back home you get re-imbursed...that is the way I read it.

Yeah, I’d hope this was the case. But I don’t understand why my niece is being denied coverage…she bought and registered the Jeep in Arizona (her home state) but has been driving it in Canada for a majority of each year because that’s where she’s attending college.

Maybe the different is she’s not up there just for a short trip but rather temporarily residing there?

In any event, the Cdn dealer is denying warranty coverage for a malfunctioning transmission in a less than two year old Wrangler 😡

She could argue it a bit as a temporary resident. Most likely the dealer just doesn’t want the hassle of fighting all the corporate crap…. She could call around to a dealer who will. Or just book a weekend in Bellingham and be in the US.

Not new and dealer service centers are brutal in BC. It's a long list problems and even young family members working in that industry have a long list of complaints and deal with stress as a result of this greedy industry. And this doesn't take into account billing out of country for warranty work reimbursement.

I bought a new Toyota Van (total overland vehicle) in 1985, but my wanted specs required a Van brought up from California. My local Vancouver Island Toyota dealership refused to work on it a couple times as it was very different then the models they sold - not just because they couldn't bill back for the warranty charges
