Need a little help with the AC

I posted this over on the Mud but havent really had any responses. So, I thought I would give it a shot over here.

I have a 2000 Hundy. My AC stopped working a couple of weeks ago. I took it to the shop yesterday to get Smogged and asked the shop to look at it. They called me and told me the compressor lock sensor is bad. They said unfortunately the sensor is built into the Compressor and to fix it would cost either almost $1200 for a new compressor and labor to install or around $275 to bypass the sensor. At first the $275 solution seems like a no brainer. But, if the compressor should seize up, the sensor would not tell it to shut don. So, then what would be the thing to worry about? Blown belt? Other?

Any one else been through this? Have a link to a compressor replacement that isnt going to cost the farm? I have found them on-line in the $300-400 range. Any one replaced the built in sensor? Looking for some advice here.

Also, who on here has replaced the Compressor themselves? I was looking in the FSM and other than the pain in the backside of having to pull the LH driveshaft, any tricky things I should know about?

What about draining the refrigerant? Any one done that or have any tips? It is been almost 15 years since I have worked on AC&R systems and then it was on a ship in the Navy. If I can get a compressor for 3-400 bones and recharge the system for around $150-175. I can save $5-600 if I do most of it myself.

Any input? Thanks!

I would get a second opinion from an aircon specialist.
Im wary of shops that tell you its all built in and cant be repaired

Get a shop to reclaim the gas

Especially if you are running R12. Most shops will work with you on evacuating the system then let you do your own compressor change.(and don't forget a new dryer) If you do have a R12 unit you should also take the chance to convert to R134A.

The penguins, Aussies and Kiwis will thank you. That hole in the ozone layer is getting bigger :)

Did you run the on-board AC diagnostics to verify the problem?
For $1200 I would have a dealer look at it. Personally I would only use a Toyota OEM new compressor no matter who does the repair.

'93 was the last year for R-12 in new vehicles. Yes R-12 is more expensive but you get cooler air with it.
