Well its time to upgrade stereo system. I have the factory AM/FM, cassette/CD deck with factory speakers in the front doors. Have a pair of Pioneer 6x9s in boxes in back. Took the 6x9s out of my old 91 runner where they were mounted in the side panels in the cargo area where they sounded great. Mounted in the side panels in the 97 and they sound like crap. Thats why they are in boxes. They do sound better like that, but I dont like them like that. Need sugestion for simple system with i pod hook up. Want to put new speakers in all 4 doors. And have a Bazooka 8 inch sub to replace the 6x9s with.

iPod/amp/speakers...simple $50 door speakers that is.

...wouldn't even bother with an aftermarket head unit anymore.

I used to run high end stereo in my trucks, but after being broken into 3 times I quit doing that.

Now just a hidden iPod, kept the stock head unit (for stealthiness)..and mild upgrade door speakers over stock, behind the stock grills.

I would go to Crutchfield and plug in what you are looking for. They are an awesome company and will be able to tell you what will fit and what will not.

I have heard an 8 inch sub will fit under the drivers seat and sounds awesome.

As for me, I have the stock cassette unit with a tape adapter to run my iPod and it works well. One day I might try the sub under the seat and/or switch out the door speakers for better sound. I hear the door speakers are hard to switch out as nothing aftermarket really seems to fit right but after looking on crutchfield it seems that info might be wrong.

throw it under the passenger seat for the lady friend :sombrero:

I don't have a system in my 4runner, but on a previous SUV I had infinity reference door speakers up front, some random tweeters, and then infinity 6" mids in the rear doors. had a 6x9 adapter plate for the mids to mount and the round speakers were a much improved sound! Also had a 4 channel amp to power all 4 door speakers as the headunit did not have enough power. I later added a 10" sub, but I think even a shallow box with a decent 8" or 10" sub in the back would be pretty decent.
I have a friend with a 4runner and he took a stock SRT4 neon subwoofer enclosure (some plastic thing with a pioneer sub) not the most steller, but 50 bucks and it fit perfect on the driver side wheel well in the cargo area not taking up much space
