Need bolt specs for a pistol grip on Mossberg 500 12 ga.

Trying to install a pistol grip on a Mossberg 500 12 ga. I bought the pistol grip used and it didn't come with the bolt needed to attach the grip to the receiver. The bolt I'm referring to is similar to the one that secures the std. shoulder stock to the receiver, just shorter. Looks to be about 3/8" or 7/16" dia and coarse thread.

Could go to the hardware store and look around, but thought someone might know exactly which diameter, thread and length that I need. Thanks:)

When I helped install a pistol grip (purchased used on eBay/missing bolt) on my brother-in-law's 500, we took the old long stock bolt to Lowe's and matched it w/1/2" diameter, course thread, and 2" long allen bolt fit if I remember correctly.

Yeah same here, no bolt included. Guess the bolt is only needed if you actually want to USE the pistol grip :) Thanks for the reply Ron I may have to take the long bolt from the stock up to the hw store.

The thing about pistol grips and Mossbergs that I don't like is the safety position. If your trigger hand is on the pistol grip the safety is tough to reach up on the tang. I like the grip for Rem 870's though.

This is where I crook my pointer finger and say: "this is my safety" (Blackhawk Down reference) :)

You're right I just thought about the safety position and while not ideal, the pistol grip makes the weapon smaller and easier to get to in the event that it's needed. I hope that if an intruder hears a round being chambered, he'd have the good sense to leave. But if not, I'll have to fuss with the safety in the dark while half asleep. Maybe I should practice once I get the pistol grip installed. :)

I have a 500 set up with a pistol grip and white light for home defense. These are my thoughts, FWIW....I think you're going to want to 'weld' your firing hand back to your hip or the side of your torso for stability while using the spot beam or the laser to do the aiming. If you train that way, that's where the weapon will be when adrenaline starts flowing. Anyways, if you dry fire rehearse for awhile, you'll see it's not too difficult to operate the 500's safety.
