I'm starting the search for some 4.10 gears for my 98 Disco 1. Called a man in NY today and he wanted $450.00 per set, is this normal??? I'm going to lockers and 285/75/16 tires soon and need to regear, has anybody already been thru this??? Any information appreciated.

Thanks,

If you're going to lock that truck, you're much better off to do a Toyota conversion. With new gears, lockers and at least new rear shafts you're going to be into it for $2000 or better.

For the same $450 each you'll pay for the gears you can buy used Toyota e-locker differentials and forgo the cost of the ARBs. A set of front and rear shafts/CVs from Keith at http://www.rovertracks.com/index.html and you'll have a bomb-proof set of axles, especially with that tire size.

4:10 is the most common ratio these e-lockers came in so finding them is easy.

Keith is a great guy and on this board as "Revor". See this post: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9310 He's right in Colorado too. If he doesn't chime in on this thread, give him a call.

Jim,
That is exactly the information I'm looking for! I've thoought about the toyota conversion to make things easier and tough. So the e-locker comes in the rear toyota axle already and then you just put an ARB in the front toyota axle??? I'll call Keith and maybe he can straighten me out on this.....

A big X2 for Keith at Rovertracks, don't tell him I said that as I don't want his ego to get any bigger for fear of him not fitting into his Rover anymore:)

The e-locker was an option on Tacomas, 4-Runners, etc and came in the rear only. What you'll need is two rear carriers from these trucks and install one in each end of yours. (There was also a high-pinion front e-locker in some Land Cruisers, but I don't feel that's the best way to go...many do.)

A rock-solid and proven conversion. I run these diffs and 30-spline axles in my Series truck too.

Jim did you use the conversion from www.rovertracks.com? I just looked at their site and it looks like $1800.00 for the front and $550.00 for the rear plus you then need the toyota third members. So you have e-lockers front and rear??

I didn't use Keith's axles as he only does them for coil-sprung trucks. I used axles from this guy: http://seriestrek.com/axles.html :)

Yes, I have Toyota e-lockers with a less common 4:56 ratio. It's been in for a few years and thousands of miles now and has been perfect. I'm building a 109 right now that is getting the same set-up with 4:10s. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8169

Geez, look at the paint on that front axle ... you'd think ya' knew someone with some skills! ;)

(smarty pants mode off)

Having had the Great Basin 4.10's in my Disco for five or six years now along with the TruTrac in the front and Detroit in the back ... I'd say that selectable lockers are most likely a better idea, and that the Toyota stuff makes great sense.

Kreutzer's a great guy and all, but he's headed west just now ... tomorrow(?) ... to get that big red bus, isn't he? ... damn, slipped back into sarcasm mode

Check with KK and you'll have all the info you need.
