Need Help Blowing fuses...

I am trying to install a ORO LitePlate. There are three wires that come out of the LED unit, 1 ground, one tail and one brake line. So I wired them up and now every time I turn on the headlights, I pop the 10A taillight fuse, and when I hit the brake I blow that fuse as well. The gound is great and it all works in the driveway with out the truck on. Any other suggestions?

PS. Here is a pic:

Hello Wil,
Can you elaborate on the problem. Color of wires - Ground - ? - Tail - ? - Turn - ?. Also can you tell us were you are connecting the wires to. Are you trying to use the license plate light as a third brake light? Simple lighting the plate should only be two wires tail and ground. If you want the brake light to work you might need a relay. I need more information.

Thanks

Justin-

Ok, I am trying to use it as a third brake light and plate light.

The LitePlate has three wires:
1. Ground = Black
2. Plate = Green
3. Brake/Tail light = Red.

Following the directions (for a Jeep) I first grounded the unit (Black) to the frame. Then I spliced in to my old plate lights and took the white/green light and connected that to the Green cable. I then spliced into my trailer wire control unit (easy way to figure out the brake wire) and connected that to the red brake light.

Ok so all that is done... sweet! Test it out. Everything works. Great! Go and start up the truck and pop, pop.... blew both the 10 amp fuses for the tail and brake lights. I then went and checked every splice (soldered) and grounding... all were clean and clear. So until I figure this out I just cut all wires.

Any good input Justin?

Try splicing the black wire back into the trailer harness ground. I believe you are shorting out the lights by connecting the black wire to the frame. Worth a try. Make sure you install new fuses with the correct amp rating.

Wil,

I'm sorry but I had to laugh when I read the title to this thread, "Need help blowing fuses". I thought to myself, I never have a problem with that. Just touch that little red wire to metal...and poof, the fuse is blown.

Good luck with resolving the problem!

I called ORO, no help there. The LED's take such as small amperage It has to be the grounding. I will just re-adress the entire issue when I install the camera system this upcoming weekend. I hope it is just a stupid grounding problem.

I would def. say its a grounding problem if you blow BOTH fuses!

Yeah I was grounding to the frame, I will try splicing into the trailer plug grounding... but IIRC, it too gets grounded to the frame.

Did I mention I hate wiring?

Trailer Wiring Before or After Control Unit?

Hello Will:

Are you tapping into the trailer wiring after the control unit? If so, you might try tapping in to the source wiring before the controll unit (similar to tapping directly to the Tacoma's wiring). I don't have experience with the problem you're having, but that control unit changes the way the wiring reacts to make the signals work and perhaps that causes an issue with the grounds?

Good luck,

Howard-

I am taping into it prior to the trailer control unit. The odd part is that it works fine on the battery alone, but once the truck is running it blows the fuses. It was a nice sense of false completion.
