Need help getting my "first" expedition vehicle going again.

Hey all,

I need some help getting my 1981 Suzuki TS100 running again. I recently moved back to my hometown, and pulled the bike out of my Dad's shop. I haven't ridden it in at least 8 or 9 years. It is a small dual sport, but would be perfect for toiling around on dirt roads around town.

Since the bike hadn't been started in a good while, I drained all fluids and replaced them. The carburetor was gummed up and stuck, so I tore it apart. A couple cans of carb cleaner later, all parts are clean and back in motion.

Put everything back together and got it to fire up after a couple of kicks. I love this bike, always, always started for me growing up.

Now here is the problem and where I need help. The bike WILL start and continue to run if you work the choke (on and off). If you turn the choke off, the bike runs at full RPM for a few seconds and then dies.

I am pretty sure there is a problem with the carburetor, but don't know what. I tried adjusting the air/fuel mix screw as well as the float height. Neither seem to make much of a difference.

Any advice? I really want to do a full restoration on this thing and put some miles on it. Thanks in advance!

your jets are probably gummed up, even if you took it apart and cleaned it there was likely more gunk in the fuel line. have the tank flushed if you can, replace the rubber hoses and clean out the carb again.

another important point is since its been sitting so long you might want to concider pulling the flywheel off and cleaning up the points for the distributor.

replace the air filter as well, the foam in those ones can degrade and cause damage to your engine.

and last of all, rip it up and post some dang pictures!

Thanks for the quick reply!

I know, I know, pictures are a necessity! I am planning on pulling it all apart again this weekend. I really want this thing running.

I haven't thought about the points, I will do that as well. If I can't get it running, I will order new parts for the carb (jet's, float's, etc.) Just want to post this out there and get some expert advice before I spend money that doesn't need to be spent.

Success!

I cleaned the entire fuel system as suggested. The problem turned out to be the pilot jet. I pulled it out, and it was clogged. Cleared that, put it all back together, and started on the 2nd kick. Man, I love this bike. 30 years old and still runs great!

Sorry for no pictures. Of course, when I want to use the camera it is out of juice.

There will be more coming. I am planning to do a full restoration. Thank guys, your expertise has really helped me here.
