The lady is wanting a new camera. Honest her little sisters dog ate her old one. She had a cheap nothing fancy camera and always wanted more. But it was just some thing she was given so it worked. I would like to buy her a better camera she is not a pro so I just want to find her the best I can afford. I was thinking the $400 to $500 range should get her some thing.

I have been looking at the Canon Rebel T3 alot but honest im a wrench monkey I know jack about these things.

x2 on the S100 if going the point and shoot route. Also had good luck with a Canon G9, pretty sure the newer models have good reviews as well.

m4/3 camera.. Olympus, Panasonic

Google those two plus m4/3.

Great cameras coming from p&s, plus they are still relatively compact.

Most often what she complained about was picture quality and the lack of options for adjustment from the point and shoot. Old camera was a olympius. I will be looking in to what was mentioned in just a few minuets. Curently all pictures are taken with her htc phone.

All of these are high quality cameras and can be had for $400 or less. All of them have good image quality. All of them give you the complete range of exposure control, from full-program to full manual. All of them will shoot in RAW format.

The Canon is very small.

The LX5 is a bit larger than the Canon, but I like the lens better.

The two Olympus cameras are larger (not really pocket cameras) but they have the flexibility of interchangeable lenses.

You will likely be happy with any of these cameras.

Very low shutter count Pentax Kr or Kx would fit in that range easily. Fantastic cameras and you can get them with a couple of lenses at that price. Youll never need another one.
