Need Help with Surfcasting gear for the OBX

I need some help picking some inexpensive surf casting gear for the OBX. I do not want to spend much because we only get there at best once a year at worst every other year. The last time I used Uncle Bruno's 6' bait casting rod and real and it did not work so well.

I was at Cabela's and saw what they called a King Catfish rig that had a 9-10' rod and heavy real. It was fairly cheap.

What type and size of tackle should I stock up on. I don't really care what I catch I just like to past the time while the kids swim, but the though of catching something to eat is cool.

We are planning on going to the north core island in July.
Thanks

I just took a cheap setup from bass pro shop down to Baja and it worked great.... it was about $80...

Wal-Mart on the Banks!

I forgot my gear on my last trip there and bought from a local bait shop on the strip in Hatteras... about $35 for the cheap set-up. They were not friendly to me at all... 2 days later at the Wal-Mart there I saw almost the same rid for $10 less.... I am all for supporting a local business, but not when I get treated like dirt (seemed to get that a lot from the locals, which is sad since I have been going there for almost 20 years)

Anywho... buy from either shop when there!

Don't forget, you need an saltwater license to fish from the beach!

If you're using Davis Shore Ferry service, they sell bait, tackle and ice, on the mainland side.

I can't remember what the tackle actually is....something like a 2 or 3 oz pyramid sinker, connected to a leader with two arms swinging off the side, your leaders and hooks connect to the arms. I'm sure someone knows what I mean....I buy them at WalMart.

2/0 - 3/0 - 4/0 sized hooks

We've got WalMart "Striper" rods and reel sets....something like 60 or 80 pound test line on them, but in reality we've never caught anything really big. We've caught just as much and the same sized fish on our "river" rods we use locally (Ugly sticks and spinning reels, 6-10 lb test)

If I can think what that darned rig is called I'll repost....
