Ok so it looks like a trade is going to happen, my toyota pickup for a '98 jeep wrangler. If all goes as planned I will be heading to Colorado this weekend to make the swap.
Anyway I am brand new to the Jeep thing and the obvious issue is space so I would love to see the creative ways you all have managed to pack a weekend worth of stuff in those l;ittle jeeps.
Also pics and ideas for front and rear bumpers, etc.

The interior rack pins in the rear to the Factory Seat-Belt Bolt holes, and then is hinged off of the front rollbar. Therefore i can pivot the rear of the upper rack up towards the rollbar and hook it onto the rollbar, making room underneath for securing and getting to the lower things.

cool !
I am already thinking of building a trailer, I am stripping all the good stuff off my truck such as roof top tent, fridge, water tank,drawers.....
no way I can fit all that on a Jeep so if I decide not to build a trailer look for alot of cool stuff up for sale.

I really like the Hanson front and rear bumpers. Their rear tire carrier rack is pretty good, but requires a bit of customization to make stout. But the bumpers are bombproof.

I have the Hanson and love it. No Ratles.
This is a weeks load of camping loaded in my jeep.
and it also carried tools, spare oil, gas and tools.

One thing I like about the Hanson is the rack can be taken off if not needed in a few minuts

Storage solutions

I have an '06 Unlimited long wheel base Wrangler, and still dont have room for gear when I load up the wife, two kids and a dog. I had a full roof rack on my old Jeep but was not a big fan. The solution that I came up with, and a better way to get my wife to camp in the cold Colorado nights, is a small pop up camper. This leaves me a wide open Jeep with no racks of any kind and all the gear in the trailer. And now all my Jeep friends are following suite. I have a larger popup shown below, but he most popular camper we use the Fleetwood Neon because it can be made into a true off road trailer (see link). It is truly amazing that we have been able to take these campers on some of the toughest mountain trails in Colorado that no one dreamed we could make.

I hate to plant the seed on yet another money pit in your head, but the trailer has worked very well for us. You might consider this when buying a rear bumper that can be used to tow. Rock Hard 4x4 makes nice rear bumpers with towing capability and rack options as well. Plus the Rock Hard tire carrier locks in the open possition which is handy on the trail. I personally like the Smittybilt for the front bumper because it looks good and has a high approach angle clearance for the tires. Both are pricy but worth the money.

Good luck and happy wheeling with the new Jeep!

I hope you're getting ALOT of money with this trade...Even then I still wouldn't trade my Toyota P/U for a Wrangler. Unless it was an LJ or a CJ8/6 (I have a thing for mid-long LWB Jeeps) That said, I'd start looking at the 88" Rover Crowd for good storage advice in a SWB rig. I think a copy-cat hard-top for Wranglers ala Series Rovers would be awesome. I'd much prefer the ambulance doors to a lift hatch. Aslo, look for a "Congo Cage" for Wranglers. You're going to have to store alot of stuff on the outside of the rig to carry as much as you do now.

Just my $.02 : curious though, why are you trading??? Seems like a step backwards to me with all the neat stuff you've done to your truck.

Cheers

I know I thew up in my mouth a little too when I first had this offered but after driving a wrangler here localy I actually have a lot more physical room and I have a backseat that my kids can use.
A couple weeks ago I went on a weekend fishing trip with my son and just assumed my daughter didn't want to go with me, so as my son and I are getting ready to leave she has here stuff ready but I have only one extra seat, needless to say it was diffacult explaining to a 9 year old why she couldn't go. So no matter what I do to my Toyota there is just not enough sitting space and for me being a dad is number one priority.
On a brighter note I am keeping all the non truck specific stuff like the Roof top tent, awning, drawers, fridge, water tanks, etc. I would never even consider trading my truck fully equipt for a wrangler. My plans are to build a offroad trailer to pull behind the Jeep using all the misc parts from my truck but I really like that Fleetwood trailer though, gonna have to do some research and if I go that route I will offer all my stuff for sale here first!

Keep up with the pictures!:coffeedrink:

... UH yeah... That would be pretty tough. I completely understand now, single cab P/U's can be rough. I remember taking my friends 90 P/U on local river trips and not wanting to leave anything behind because there was little to nowhere to lock it up (5 guy's 'stuff" can pack a cab pretty quickly and is all accessible by one broken window ;) )

Wranglers are great rigs, I just far prefer the drivetrain of our trucks w/the exception of all the torque the 4.0L has. That and I prefer the road manners of a longer WB rig. SWB Wranglers get pretty squirly in the wet or the snow (my experience is with a 4.0L 5spd 92 YJ on 32's), just be aware of that with the kids in the truck. And like I said, start thinking of ways to strap things to the outside fo the truck ;)

Jeep Wrangler + rear passengers = aggressive load management. Less is more!

I've seen a kit somewhere that splits the rear bench seat into two separate pieces so if you only need one seat in the back you can take the other one out and get more space.

My experience doesn't reflect this observation. I've been driving Wranglers since 1996. Had a Samurai from 1988 until 1994. Lots of time is SWB rigs, about 250,000 miles. I don't once recall a time that wheelbase presented a problem because of wet or snowy roads. The only issue I ever had in snow was when the Jeep had automatic lockers front and rear. Even then it just meant no 4WD on the street.

Could I get the rear end to slide out? Absolutely, but the Jeep and Samurai were much more predictable and recoverable than other vehicles I've owned.

I am absolutely comfortable driving my two young children in my Wrangler during any road condition.

it's just an inherent thing with SWB -v- LWB rigs... The LWB rig is just going to resist spinning more easily andf be more catchable in a slide. I'm not saying that they'll just randomly drive off the road, but if you hit a slick patch in 2wd not expecting it, the *** end will come around ;) My trucks tall and doesn't have that much more WB and it's just the same. It just requires a driver that pays attention, that's all. I'm glad you're comfortable in yours, it means your kids are safer. I'm just warning a guy who's goign from a more WB stable rig to a very SWB rig to be aware of these facts and know about them before the spin starts. It's physics and the more you know about it the better off you are eh ;)

Oh and yeah F/R auto-lockers are horrible in the snow at high speed IMO. You want the fastest way into a ditch throw F/R Spools or even Detroits on a Sami and go charge up a mountain in a snow storm... that's squirly :D

Cheers

Dave

EDit: Ok, the fact that you're in OH might have something to do with it too... Around here in the NW our roads are SO CROWNED to keep rain off them that it makes slick driving conditions different. Throw in all the hiills and mountains and you have other dynamics you're not going to see much of in OH. Plus we don't salt so the roads here get pretty icy when the weather get's bad. Just something to consider eh. I'm guessing AZ's a little more like up here???
