Need some help with Eurovans.

Sitting on my hands waiting to buy my next rig, trying to get my mom moved out to California I get a call from my brother saying he has a 1999 VW Eurovan pop top camper at the dealership he works at, 2.4L 5 cylinder engine AWD with 90k miles.

I did some research and know the 2.4L was available in North America from 1993-1998, but I am unsure about the AWD part of it, and whether or not it is manual or automatic.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Are his facts mixed up or could this be a rare gem?

Also, they only want 2k for it, which makes me suspicious. Unless as ihatemybike suggested to me, they just have no clue what it's worth.

I didn't think North American-spec Eurovans were originally available with AWD. A few have been converted, but I'd be a little worried that it was a temporary import and only available for sale for export.

I didn't even think about the fact it might be a temp import. I was having a hard time finding US part stores that listed the diesel engine. Just spent some time on www.Cars.com, only found one diesel and zero AWDs.

Yes, I have been concerned about that fact as well considering I cannot find any AWD diesels in America. Perhaps he got mixed up on the idea of it being AWD, and it might just be diesel or not even at all and just a V6. Are these RWD or FWD vans? Still, it seems the diesels are relatively rare as well.

I guess I will find out when I talk to him and get a VIN.

TDI Syncro EV's were never sold here, I think you could get them in Canada though and defineately in Europe. And there are a few people bringing in parts to do the conversions.

They are FWD vans normally.

Just like all Syncro's and TDI's, maintenence and upkeep, along with parts are not cheap and or easy by any means.

I would love to get my hands on one, but not a cheap alternative for a budget minded explorer.

tell your brother to confirm with his eyes and down on his hands and knees to see if it is AWD.

Not AWD, but it is diesel per the inventory at his work. He can't find it now though. Oh well, I really don't want a FWD anywho.
