So, my Trek 6700 was ripped off from my back yard a few days ago, insurance is going to cover replacement cost, minus my deductible.

I'm going to have minimum of $500 up to about $1000.

I realize this isn't much of a budget by some standards, but this will buy plenty of bike for my needs.

My plan is to buy a 29er and wonder what people recommend in this price range.

My past two bikes have been a Gary Fisher and Trek - I like the geometry of the frames and the ride comfort, if that helps the recommendations at all.

Thanks,

Jeff

More details of what kind of riding you'll be doing would help. Do you want a full-suspension? Hard-tail? Geared or Singlespeed?

Assuming it will be XC type bike, I'd go for something like a Redline Monocog Flight 29er. Around $7-800. If you want gears, they can be added. If you want a front fork, also can be added. Pretty versitile bike. Also, a Surly Karate Monkey can be had for less than $1000. (also will be set up singlespeed, rigid, but is just as versitile if wanting to add gears and suspension).

If you want a SS-only bike, I really liked the Redline Monocog 29er I had. I thrashed that thing, and it kept coming back for more. On the heavy side, but very stout and fun.

Geared option--not too many options... GT Peace 9r can be had for less than $1000. But it doesn't have a front suspension fork. Can't think of others off the top of my head.

Gary Fisher is no more, but Trek has the "Fisher Collection" or whatever they call it. GF always had pretty good value for the bike, but not sure if that will be the same at Trek.

I'll second fairweather's suggestion of going used. You can get some great deals on your local craigslist, ebay or mtbr.
