New Binoculars, keep or return?

My wife got me a really nice set of Nikon 8x40 binocs for my birthday, I like 'em but she had thought they were going to be compact (amazon had them listed in the "compact" category).

They are a little bulky for hiking, but I think for the most part they will just be carried in the truck. I'm sure I'll appreciate the improved performance over a set of compacts, but she wants to send them back.

I'm not a birder, or a voyeur, I just like to see cool stuff from far away, and maybe look at some planets in the night sky.

From my experience, if you're not a binoculars guy they need to be super convienient for them to get used. I inherited a beautiful Nikon from my dad, but never use them because of the size.

If you're a photographer, invest in a zoom lens instead.
