Looks like the Aussies are getting a very fuel efficient diesel X-Trail. Wonder when the Patrol will get a new and improved engine.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: NISSAN TO EXPAND X-TRAIL LINE-UP WITH NEW DIESEL ENGINES

Nissan will bring its first turbo diesel versions of the popular X-TRAIL to Australia with sales commencing from July 2008.

Two turbo diesel engines will be offered, a refined base engine producing 110KW (320Nm) and matched to a new 6-speed automatic, while the high-performance 127KW (360Nm) diesel is matched to a six-speed manual transmission.

Apart from offering impressive performance, the sophisticated new engine is remarkably fuel efficient with combined fuel consumption figures of 7.4L/100km for the manual and 8.1L/100km for the automatic. The basis for both diesels is a common rail direct injection turbocharged 2.0-litre, 16 valve four cylinder unit.

The new diesel X-TRAIL will be available in two new specification grades, with the new entry-level designated 'TS' - based on the ST-L petrol X-TRAIL and the premium version designated 'TL' - based on the Ti petrol X-TRAIL.

The TS is packed with features including a full compliment of safety features including front, side and curtain airbags, stability control (ESP), ABS brakes, seat belt pre-tensioners and Nissan's intelligent ALL MODE 4x4-i system, which incorporates Uphill Start Support (USS) and Downhill Drive Support (DDS).

Uphill support features are far from new. VW had something of the sort in an uphill start feature way back in the 60's, and I believe others did as well, even on manual transmissions.

Uphill start sets power and brake or power and clutch so that once set, the vehicle is held against gravity and all the driver needs to do is hit the gas when ready to go. In the manual I would expect it to drag the clutch to accomplish this, and it is commonly a high maintenance feature.

Downhill one would suppose would be an ABS based thing that would control throttle and brakes to maintain a constant rate of descent, something like the Toyota Land Cruiser feature that holds a constant crawl speed.

Personally, if you can't master uphill starts and downhill descents, you might want to think about moving to Kansas.

Yeah my Dad's 46 Dodge had Hill start, my buddies old Subaru justy had hill start. VW's have had it for years. Hardly new tech.

Funny, growing up in the mountains and living here all my life, this is the first time I have ever heard of these fancy things for starting on a hill or going down a hill.

Very cool engine lineup!

Uphill support was available on Subaru's back in the 80's if I remember correctly. Very nice for manual transmissions on hills in traffic.

Don't know how much the Patrol weighs, but Nissan already has on its shelves the YD25DDTi engine with 174HP and 297ftlbs. In some markets, Guatemala and Australia for example, that engine is fitted in the Pathfinder and, of course, the Navara.

I recall reading that Toyota recently improved the output on the Hilux's 3.0L TDI engine so that might provide Nissan with the impetus to tweak the YD25DDTi further. On the other hand, for its displacement (2.5L) the YD25DDTi might be close to its limits.

the go ad upgrade the X-trail in other countries and here they change it into the Rogue :Blah: idiots. My parents have an X-trail (we got them in canada) and its a pretty cool little rig.
