New Dodge!

The phrase, "Thats ma boat." comes to mind when I bought this bohemith of a truck.

This story begins about 6 years ago when I was just out of boy scouts and hangin out with my friend Alex. We were looking for a trucks to go to college in and it was a toss up between a toyota 4runner and a dodge 2500. Well the mpg factor at that time played in, so I ended up with a 4runner. Alex however was off to Wyotech and bought the Dodge.

About two and a half years ago at Thanks giving, he was on his way over the i90 pass in Wa when a tree fell on the vehicle he was riding in. Total act of god, 70mph and a tree falls on his car, not infront of it, not in the road and he didnt see it, ON it. It killed him.

This summer I came to the conclusion that I cant afford to keep my toyota pickup and I was tired of beating on my subaru to go to side jobs. I needed a truck. I decided it was time to get the dodge I wanted. After talking to a few people I found out that Alex's Dodge wasnt in the wreck as I originally thought. I got in touch with his parents and they said it was for sale.

I sold my Toyota truck, and my 4runner and picked up the Dodge for 8k.

Its a 2001 Dodge ram 2500 SLT laramie with the Cummins 24v diesel with 187k on the odo. From what I hear I pretty much stole it. It Blue books at 10,500. It needs a new set of tires and some TLC but its compleatly tuned up and runs like a champ. The tale gate has a dent in it and there is a little rust around the edge of the fender wells from rock chips but everything else checks out fine.

I do have one problem. The ABS and BRAKE lights are constantly on and i cant figure out why? Any ideas?

Here are a few of my pics ma new boat.

The plans for this thing are mostly work but it will get modified into an expedition truck soon enough. I have to pay it off first.

IF you have brake light, and ABS light, you probably have a bad speed sensor....

Watch the speedo closely(and carefully), does it seem lazy? react a little funny?

The rear sensor is also your speedo-sensor...

There could also be a broken wire in the front sensors....

Those are the 2 most common problems, and, with both lights on, it leads me to believe that is the problem. I have the 01 S/M on my hard drive, and can help you out with other things if you need....

Oh, check out cumminsforum.com, there is a section for the 24v cummins era trucks....

Well I installed my GPS today to check the speed on the speedo vs the gps. I know the GPS is 99% accurate. The speedo is off by about 5mph. Im guessing because of the tires. I have metric 34s on it, 315/75 r16. So I dont know what to think. Is there a way to test it?

Also I seem to have a starting issue. When its first starting either cold or after a few hours from its previous run, it takes like 5-10 seconds of cranking and 2 or 3 tries to get it started. Its like the fuel line isnt staying pressurized or something. Any ideas?

the 24v motors are notorious for havign lift pump problems. i have a friend who also has an 01 and he has been down this road before. i my self am nto a diesel guru but it does sound like the lift pump to me. this based on hearing my buddie complain about the same problems. hope this helps.

i talked to my buddy. he said that the lift pumpm would not supply enough fuel to the injection pump, thus ruining the injection pump. i had some info reversed. sorry about that. anyway, it sounds likek this may be your problem

before you do anything else, upgrad your lift pump. get the airdog 100. a little research at cummins forum will tell you all you need to know.

I need money before I can fix anything that doesnt cost more than about 5 bucks. So far i have fixed a few of the little things, just to bring it up to par. one of the interior lights was out. It needed a new battery J-hook, one was so rusted it looked like a spike. Im going to install my cb tomorrow maybe.

What does the lifter pump do? And how does it differ from the normal fuel pump?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the lift pump feeds the injection pump with fuel from the tank. The injection pump then distributes fuel to the cylinders.

i would go aftermarket and get a fuel pressure gauge, egt gauge minimum.

Also do the vent tube mod or you will lose oil on anything more than 22deg downslope.

i did the mod already and went down a 40 deg slope at red cone colorado and didnt lose a drop. i would still put a catch bottle on it to get the vapors. my oil pressure stayed where it was supposed to the whole time!

but do the lift pump asap as you dont want a dead $1200 injector pump.

been there done that. $3000 later full fuel system replacement, injector pump, lift pump, edge juice with monitor(well worth it as it saved my engine once already before i did the vent mod).

Has anyone use the BD kit? I did some research online and I found only 3 bad reviews, but i'm pretty sure they werent the exact same kit I am looking at.
