New Gen. I Montero

Well guys, I found my rig. It is a 1990 Mitsubishi Montero LWB in white. I bought the beast with an existing 2" BL and unknown suspension lift. It has 35" BFG's and I think it looks pretty good. A little beat up, but hey that shows its been used! I already have a rear axle with air locker from a 94 SR and I plan on some more upgrades from the Gen II. Does anyone know if the Gen II T-case will fit in the Gen I or is the Gen I T-case center diff lock ready, but just needs linkage?

The gen 2 T-case will not fit without drive shaft mods and figuring out how to bolt it to the trans.

There is no diff in the gen 1 t-case. So you could say that it is "locked" in both 4hi and 4lo.

So they are the same case? The Gen I has the center diff lock but no option for use without the lock? I am cool with that!

They are not the same case. The gen 1 transfer case does not have a differential, so thus no full time 4wd option. Torque is split 50/50 in both 4 hi and 4 low. So you cant really say it has a center diff lock since there is no center diff.

Gotcha! It's that center diff that is throwing me off!

Generally speaking...putting differentials in the t-case is something you'll see in later model 4x4's to allow use of 4x4 on pavement. Most earlier models with this were full time 4x4's. with no 2wd option.

Mitsu was one of the first to offer all options in one transfer case with the introduction of the Active Track T-case in the early 90's with the gen 2 which had 4 options..2hi/4hi(AWD)/4hl (locked) and 4low(locked).

The gen 1 was a standard type case with 2 hi, 4 hi and 4 lo...

Ok so I got a parts car! A 1987 2 door Montero 5 speed. I plan on selling the 5- speed and using the rest to replace missing parts and spruce up the interior and exterior. Not really any fun mods, but it looks like I can put the 2 door back seat in the LWB and make it 3 rows. Add the sliding rear windows and its set for passengers! The car is in great shape for an 87, I got lucky!

The sliding rear windows wont fit in the LWB, but you can try sourcing them form overseas. Sometimes you can work out a trade....The UK got them and so did the Asian countries like Thailand.

How about the rear sliders on Gen II's?

Well the first parts car is gone and I have a second one on the way. Looking to swap out the entire interior, dash and all. I haven't made much progress on the rig aside from, maintenance and a new hood. I still need to finish changing out the front sheetmetal and putting the condensor and lines back in.

On another note I took it offroad for the first time yesterday. Going into 4L the rig still seems to move pretty fast. I tried to get the tranny to go to 1st and it seems I only have P R N D and thats it!! I turned the OD off and it seemed a little better. Not sure if this is the way they came or I am just doing something wrong. Anyone?

You should have P,N,D,2, and 1. Put the trans in 1 and it will hold 1st gear. If you dont have this option then someone must have swapped something around. Your rig looks to have a body lift...Maybe the linkage was not adjusted after the body lift was done. Theres an adjustment nut on the linkage at Passenger side of the transmission. You may have to loosaten it and re-adjust the linkage to compensate for the BL.

That has to be it. I see no other reason it wouldn't have a 2nd and 1st. Thanks for that! I will take a look and let you know how it turns out.
