While waiting for the parts to arrive from Australia to rebuild the engine we decided to replace the headliner that had long since disintegrated and was nothing but adhesive dust that showered down any time you rubbed the roof.
So first things first we pulled the roof rack.
Then after soaking all the hardware with break free for a few days we moved on to pulling the roof. Thankfully it came off very easily and the gasket was kept intact for reuse.
Then we brought it home and gave it a good scrubbing down that revealed lots of staining and chalked out finish. Much of the clear coat was gone from years in the Australian sun.
So we decided to sand it down.
and put a few layers of Westmarine white tinted fiberglass resin on the roof to reseal it and make it a little closer to white.
Once it was completed we returned to our plan of replacing the headliner. We decided instead of going for the standard foam headliner we would fiberglass some USGS Topographic Quadrangles onto the underside of the roof.
After much deliberating on which topos to use we selected areas where Katie and I grew up and then the places where are kids were born.
The final result is not perfect, but we are happy with it. It's a little more fun than the original headliner.
I hope you enjoy the report.
