New Maggiolina GT Med on Horizon experience

Traded the large Overland for the medium GT Maggiolina and got to use it two nights last weekend on the coast for the first time. I was able to rig up a bracket to support my Kelty Carport Deluxe to the ladder side of the Magg. You never really know how stuff will work until you get it out on an actual event. But the Carport was a nice addition and provided a cheap and relatively easy set-up buffer zone that kept the rain off of our entrance area , ladder and door.

I also used the Fiamma awning...and with an 7'x9' tarp was able to "bridge" the Carport and the awning to full protect the two doors on the Magg.

The Magg is: Quieter, warmer (this could be both good or bad...), nothing to flap in the wind, easier & quicker set-up and tear down, dust and waterproof when travelling...

All in all I'm real happy with the trade-up!!! Can't wait to get out some more!

I'll post up a few pics tonight just in case someone wants to use a Kelty Carport Deluxe in the same manner...

That's it! I was thinking of a more permanent bar, but that is the idea! Is that just a roof edge, or something heavier?

We've used it three times: At Coyote Flats which was our first trip there and the first trip after picking up the Horizon a little over a year ago; then at SnT...it was nice to stand on something a little firmer than sand after awhile ;-); and this trip to ab country :chowtime:. Matter of fact each of these times Sandy was along...maybe a pattern there for sure!

I'm not sure what you mean by "roof edge". The "L" bracket is 1"x1" aluminum...probably 1/8" thickness; with a couple 1/8" thick aluminum 'spacers' between the "L" bracket and the Maggiolina (to create space to secure the Carport straps). I also used 1/8" thick aluminum plate on the inside of the Maggiolina, similar to their "Fit Kit" brackets to distribute the load.

It wouldn't be too difficult, if one had access to someone who sews, to modify the Kelty Carport Deluxe to be more of a 'sealed' vestibule...and add a zippered door so that the wings could be brought closer to the trailer and Maggiolina for further weather resistance. Kelty did a pretty nice job with the frame work design. It's relatively quick to set-up and very taught!

Maybe a good design foundation for M&M's future accessory offering =8^)

Ah, yes. The angle looked to be pretty lightweight in the photo. That's why I was wondering if it was only a roof edge. There are many configurations of roof edge, but mainly very lightweight (maybe 28-30 gauge?) aluminum. Your 1/8" will work fine!

The Carport rocks! I have had one now for three years and it is a very versatile product. Rear or side of the truck plus, now, possible application on a RTT on a trailer! Hmmm, I do know where I might have use of a industrial sewing machine...

I am keen to see how this works as I have pondered this option for a while. I do have the real change room but have not been happy with it. I thought that maybe the new side tent on chaser #1 maybe be a possible if an adjustable bracket was used. I am not sure that I like the side tent fixed to the fiberglass of the Maggiolina.

Please share the updates as you progress.

My AT is so old it's hot gal dipped still works perfect. The Jeep however just keeps spending money

2003 (new Jeep and trailer) Flagstaff snow ....... makes the tent cold and hard to fold ... bad

2004 (camping at 4 degrees F OK in new tent, but water tanks freeze, Chaco Canyon - NM)

Judging by your last experiment with that machine, you are going to not only need access to the machine, but to someone who can sew.

You mentioned the 'changing room': Have you tried/seen the Maggiolina Veranda? Curious how easy or not it is to set-up, how bulky or not it is to stow (its 70lbs so I imagine it takes up some space ;-)) The design of the Veranda is what I think I want...just lighter fabric to lighten the load and make set-up/tear down easier.

I have the change room which is a triangle shape

It just attaches by a alloy rod and Velcro to the shell. Each time I have used it it keeps falling down. In the wife's words "portable trash!!!"

I did try and get the Veranda but was not able to get one and the cost is not that low either.

I love the Maggiolina it has been great in 50 mph wind and down to 4F.

Some where to stand and change and cook would be great, that is one point I like about the Kimberly Kampers.

Yep...and a place to hang out/eat in inclement/windy conditions. Setting up a separate tent is a total PITA. Jeez I hope someone comes up with a well designed solution...I'm getting tired of trying to design and fab everything!
