New to CB's

So I was given my first CB for Christmas, a Cobra 25LTD Classic. My expedition rig is an 01 jeep Cherokee 4x4. Since I already have the CB I need to know what else I need to get this thing working. I have read through so many CB related posts and tons of info on a bunch of forums, but I think a lot of it goes right over my head or just ends up confusing me. I need help with making a parts list so a simple CB setup and picking out the right things to use to set this CB up, that is where you guys come in. I'm trying to make a parts list, so far I have....

Antenna, thinking 4ft fiberglass firestick
CB Antenna spring
CB Cable
CB antenna Isolating stud/nut

And I want to make a bracket to mount it. Where could I get these parts at a good price and is that all I will need? Thanks in advance - Cody

Congrats on your first CB. Walcottcb.com is a pretty good place for the items you're looking for. I'm not sure about your ideas on mounting, but they offer several choices. If you look into the fender mounts they're pretty cool and you only have to drill a few "small" screw holes and it's a pretty clean look.

The fenders also a decent place because it's up front where you can see it, and if you need to remove it because of a low branch it's easy. Think about a Quick Disconnect as well to help with quick removal.

Ultimately though, look into you HAM license and you will be amazed at the clarity and power over a CB. It's really night and day in comparison but it's all good to start w/ a CB.

Truck stops are also a good source for antenna mounts and parts. Some Radio Shacks still sell CB stuff but you usually have to ask because they keep it all in back. A mag mount might be a good option for you.

The HAM vs CB thing has been beat to death here. Since so many people still use CB it's not a bad thing to have in your truck, especially since you got yours for free. Most of the locals around here have converted to HAM so I pulled the CB out of my truck and only use it occasionally with a mag mount antenna.

"Antenna, thinking 4ft fiberglass firestick"

The most important thing for your CB Radio is your Antenna. The Mounting, and the SWR Setting.

You will not be happy with a 4 foot Firestick...and you will then call a CB Radio Junk.

A Wire wrapped around a fiberglass stick, is Not your optimum antenna.

I am having Amazing results with my Wilson 1000. With the SWR Setting set properly. Or you could even step up to the Wilson 5000.

"Tests by Lockheed show Wilson 1000 has 58% more power gain than the K40".

"The 5000 Series is the World's most powerful base loaded mobile CB antenna".

Just ask Derek. This weekend he told me that I am the only one who can hear him so far away on the trail. Too bad he can't talk back that far after he drives off!....
