Nice awning leg hold-downs

The awning hold-downs in this site http://www.allsetrv.com/ probably wouldn't apply to my future awning plans (see post #23 here http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1982&page=3 I'd have a rear mounted small awning where the vertical posts' feet are pinned to the back corners of the one-wheel trailer).

However, the owner of Allset RV has the main parts for his hold-downs cast at the little foundry where I work, so I thought it might help him to spread the word about his products by mentioning it here. The basic objective is to detach the awning legs from the camper, where they are otherwise in the way when you walk out under the awning on either side. I suppose you could duct tape the legs to big rocks hauled in from around your campsite, or pin them to your own home-fabricated iron weights, but this product is arguably a more elegant solution.

Those are really nice but very pricey. I simply made some out of pvc pipe, small plastic flower pots and a little concrete. They work great.

Those anchors are nice.

Just for convenience and weight, we carry several sand bags, empty in transit, then when we need anchors we (ummmm, here I think the more accurate pronoun is "I") fill them with sand or rocks. Cam straps hold them securely to the feet of the any awning support.

The Allset ones weigh 28 lbs for the two. Our eight sandbags weigh 1 lb. Maybe for RVers the extra 27 lbs wouldn't make a difference, but I'm conscious of the GVWRs on the Xterra and SR-5, and even the F250 SD has its limits.

I do like, however, thinking "outside the box", and in the case of the Allset anchors these could be useful where space and surface are limiting factors.

No doubt these are more likely to be bought by the mega-motorhome crowd, where sand bag hold-downs are less than chic. I never set foot in one of those until last spring, my sister is kicking around the idea of one as a permanent mobile retirement residence. Man, three slide out rooms in some of them! I'm waiting for one to announce it has a slide out closet...

Still, I imagine some of you expedition characters out there with lots of extra money actually do own one of those to use as a base camp / toy hauler mobile garage. Since I don't belong to any mega-motorhome forum, this is the most effective favor I can do for Bob, the owner of Allset RV. I don't receive any commission for this, I just have a liking for made in the USA items, and Bob is quite a nice guy.
