Nikon P&S lens error?

I bought a coolpix s6000 back in mid march of this year. It went on 2 trips since and yesterday just tried to work but would close saying lens error. I did call Nikon an they said send it in (still waiting for email they were sending for shipping), issue is I can't find receipt for it which I know they will want for warranty. I'm curious as to if they will still fix it under warranty or how much it will cost?

Is this a common problem with cameras or just Nikon?

I've had it happen to two Nikons (with light service) and one Canon (a workhorse). So kinda common from my perspective. Olympus, Leica, Kodak just fine. Very risky to draw conclusions from tiny data sets, of course, but transport mechanisms in microelectronics are often a weak point it seems. Think how many CD and VHS players have crapped out because of these systems over the years.

I haven't sent this in because can't find warranty info (oops) and thought maybe easy fix. So far any of easy fixes like blow compressed air haven't worked, I don't really want to take it apart but just unsure of what might be issue.
