Last Spring, Nissan announced plans to enter the commercial cab/chassis market in USA, using their plant in Mississippi as the point where vehicles would be assembled. Automotive News recently got a few more details about the plans.
The first vehicles produced will be cab/chassis models with diesel engines, designed to compete with Ford LCF, Sprinter, Mitsubishi Fuso and Isuzu medium duty trucks. It's likely that the new models will be based on the Nissan cab-forward models called the Atleon and Cabstar, which are sold in markets in Asia and Europe.
The Atleon is built in a plant in Spain. One Atleon model is built with both axles driven. Locking and limited slip diffs are available as well. Here's what the Spanish Atleon 4x4 chassis looks like
Maybe if we all send email to Nissan, they will build a 4x4 version for USA, too. The person responsible for Nissan Light Commercial Vehicles worldwide is Giuseppe Cavallo, gcavallo@nissan-europe.com. In USA, Nissan's vice-president for light commercial vehicles is Joe Castelli. I think his email address is joe.castelli@nissan-usa.com
