Nissan Patrol GQ

After a 7 year relationship with Land Rovers, I decided to give the Nissan Patrol GQ a try.

As a child we used to have a 1983 Patrol MQ at home, it was a ver solid car with few issues that I can recall. It didn't have 5th gear for long road cruising and it certainly needed it. Suspension was on the stiff side, leafs all around. We never did a single upgrade to it, but overall it was a great vehicle and served us well until 1998. I loved that car and I always wanted to give the more modern GQ a try.

So what I bought:

1994 Nissal Patrol GQ, 2 doors, 4.2L inline 6 engine (Carburated and a little bit thirsty), solid axles with factory LSD in the rear and coils all around, interior is really basic with manual everything and vynil seats. 5 Speed Gearbox and part time 4WD.

Modifications:

First of all I need suspension, the stock suspension is not the best (Stock Defender or Discovery suspension is a lot better). I'd like a 3" Heavy Duty suspension so I can clear 33x12.50x15 BFGs, I am thinking OME springs with some kind of remote reservoir shocks, I see a lot of corrugations here and regular shocks just don't cut it, they overheat a lot.
I hear suggestions on suspension setup, spring and shock experiences....

After suspension I have a new Warn M8000 begging to be installed, that will go along with a dual optima setup, a red top and yellow top. I also new a winch bumper, any experience with TJM products?? I like their Patrol bumer a lot.

Assies with Patrol experience, I am open to suggestions!!! I know GQs are very popular down under.

Jealous I am!

Yeeah, I've heard several comments stating that the 4.2 doesn't have enough power but they usually come back saying they love the engine. Your's isn't a TDi? Love the coils though!

Carburated and a little bit thirsty

Diesels usually aren't carbureted :p I believe they offered a 4.2L diesel and a 4.2 gasoline motor. The 4.2L diesel was a bit low on the power side, but the gasoline motors was not. The 3.0L DOHC diesel was where the power is at.

The first Diesels were 4.2L naturally aspirated and they were low on power, but then Nissan released the TD42T which is the same engine with a turbo, now that's a lovely engine; I wish I had it!!!

Hi. I am new to the board and just post my intro in the intro section. I have had my 91 Safari (AKA patrol) LWB for over a year now:

Until I did the injectors and had the IP done (seals began to leak because of age & ULSD), it was very much underpowered. Long term, I am looking at doing my own turbo set-up from a 1400 UD Truck (they also came with a intercooler on their TD4.2TIs). For now I am content with the power. It has no problem hauling 7 passengers and gear where we need to go so far.
Cheers, John
