For Memorial weekend I had an extra day off so I wanted to get out of town with my son and get some camping and photography in. I contacted Spencer (Safado) and we agreed on a trip to Page with our kids.

We departed Phoenix Friday morning with our sites set on a cool and dark location just outside of Flagstaff.

We spent a few hours hiking the Lava Tube Cave and attempting to take some photos in the dark.

The Fork

The Geology of the cave is pretty amazing. There are areas where there is ice, areas where you must climb over boulders, and other areas where the floor is very smooth. The ceiling height also varies from 3ft to over 20ft. If you have some decent lighting you can see the rocks are actually quite colorful as well.

After the Lava Cave and a quick bite to eat we headed out to the Grand Falls. Unfortunately they were already dry so I said a few curse words and apologized to Spencer while the kids threw rocks over the edge. We debated on backtracking the way we came in or crossing the dry wash (that was suppose to be flowing) and make our way through the reservation towards Wupatki National Monument or Cameron.

We decided to try the dirt roads and see where they led. After a few miles we found a neat section of sand and let the kids get out of the trucks and have some fun.

After dusting off the kids we hopped back in the trucks and continued on.

We stopped at Wupatki National Monument for a little while so the kids could run around the ruin.

It was a bit windy

Once night fell we continued to Page and camped out at Lone Rock which ended up being less than ideal. The beach was packed of course but the wind had followed us from Flagstaff. Setting up tents in a sandstorm is a royal pain in the ********. We did get both our tents up and tried to rest among the partying going on around us.

Once we were done with the slot canyon we made our way out to Alstrom Point which was to be our campsite for Saturday night. Shortly after hitting dirt road we slowed down where a section of road was blocked off. Turns out Disney had just finished doing some filming in the area for an upcoming movie. John Carter of Mars. We continued down the road and much to our surprise there was still a decent amount of wildflowers along the way.

After an hour or so we reached Alstrom Point and spend a few minutes deciding where we wanted to pitch our tents for the night.

All set up

My son had fire duty. He was given the rules of no paper or any fluid or gas and had one match to make it happen. I am proud to say my little guy did it much to the surprise of both myself and Spencer.

As the sun set the lake became quite and the light evened out to get a decent shot of the viewpoint we had.

My son left his lantern on in the tent so we had to get a night shot. It took a few tries but we managed to figure out a setting that worked.

After breakfast we torn down camp while the kids played and then made our way back out to Big Water Utah. Spencer had a friend that was going to spend a few days on a house boat so we parted ways.

My son and I did a little more exploring in the area around Wahweap Hoodoos but the light was terrible so I didn't even get my camera out. We found a few more areas that are worth a little more exploring on a return trip but in the end we decided we would go ahead and head home a little early.

The highlight of the trip was 15 minutes and maybe five miles of dirt road when my son drove the Jeep for the very first time. Never seen him grin so big and definitely not for so long. :wings:

Great photos and report. It is too bad all that steel was trashed down the slot canyon, that could have been used by a lot of us folks. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Looks like a great trip once again. Always enjoy your photography. :wings:

I remember the joy my son experienced when I was teaching him how to drive out on back roads when he was about the same age. Fun stuff.

Yeap- he was still all giggles and smiles today. I remember my first couple experiences so I know he will remember his as well.

I'll let you know next time we head back up that way. Looking to do a dedicated photo trip with 4-5 photographers.

Nice photos...The kids looked like they had a blast!! Our kids will be out of school in a couple of weeks and they're already talking about camping and getting out during summer!

Really great photos, thank you for posting.

I will use these as an inspiration to get my 10 year old son out more.

Especially the "driving shot." :smiley_drive:

Priceless!

That is an expression of unbridled joy on your sons face. :)
