For Memorial weekend I had an extra day off so I wanted to get out of town with my son and get some camping and photography in. I contacted Spencer (Safado) and we agreed on a trip to Page with our kids.
We departed Phoenix Friday morning with our sites set on a cool and dark location just outside of Flagstaff.
We spent a few hours hiking the Lava Tube Cave and attempting to take some photos in the dark.
The Fork
The Geology of the cave is pretty amazing. There are areas where there is ice, areas where you must climb over boulders, and other areas where the floor is very smooth. The ceiling height also varies from 3ft to over 20ft. If you have some decent lighting you can see the rocks are actually quite colorful as well.
After the Lava Cave and a quick bite to eat we headed out to the Grand Falls. Unfortunately they were already dry so I said a few curse words and apologized to Spencer while the kids threw rocks over the edge. We debated on backtracking the way we came in or crossing the dry wash (that was suppose to be flowing) and make our way through the reservation towards Wupatki National Monument or Cameron.
We decided to try the dirt roads and see where they led. After a few miles we found a neat section of sand and let the kids get out of the trucks and have some fun.

After dusting off the kids we hopped back in the trucks and continued on.
We stopped at Wupatki National Monument for a little while so the kids could run around the ruin.
It was a bit windy
Once night fell we continued to Page and camped out at Lone Rock which ended up being less than ideal. The beach was packed of course but the wind had followed us from Flagstaff. Setting up tents in a sandstorm is a royal pain in the ********. We did get both our tents up and tried to rest among the partying going on around us.
