Northstar TC650EC and Dodge 3500

Hello Pop fans! This is my first post here at EP. The wife and I recently purchased a 2002 Northstar TC650EC. It is in really good condition. All the lights have been converted to LED. We have been looking at the Northstars for awhile now and had the opportunity to meet Billy Mackaill at a local RV show. What a great guy and what a great product. Anyway, we are planning some mods to the camper and I thought I might document them here.

First, the driveway shot:

And our first trip out to Grover Hot Springs (near Markleeville, CA):

Mod number 1: A super simple mod I read about somewhere on this forum I believe! Swap out the stock analog thermostat for a Honeywell digital one. Two screws, two wires and done. Came in super handy on that first trip. It got down into the 30's that night!

Mod number 2: I added a 4 position Blue Sea battery switch (part #6007). Switch positions are 1=camper battery, 2=truck batteries, 0=all off, 1+2=both batteries. Not too difficult of a mod, you just have to pull out the converter to get to the wires you need. The intended purpose is to allow easy separation of truck batteries from the camper systems without having to unplug anything. I tried just unpluging the trailer plug, but then I would forget to plug it back in and be driving around without tail lights. I placed the switch in the cabinet access to the water heater above the converter. The panel is oak stained with a danish wood oil and attached with 3M VHB tape.

Well, that is all the mods completed so far. Planned mods are a complete solar system consisting of Morningstar PS-30M controller, (2) Grape Solar GS-160 panels and a Trimetric 2030RV monitor. Stay tuned for those mods!

Cool combo! The Northstar will deliver for a long time. 15 yrs here on ours. Chuck the jacks and save 160# if you leave the camper on 24/7.
We hope to get up to the eastern Sierra after Memorial Day when the mob goes home.
A Hellwig standard swaybar and upgraded shocks helps a bunch with handling.

Regcabguy - I looked at the Hellwig, but I don't think it will clear the 5" exhaust...
I'm also thinking about adding the "Stableload" from TorkLift or maybe the DIY version of that.

Yeah,I just looked at mine and 5" would be tight.
My '07 5.9's suspension was overwhelmed by the camper. If the truck hadn't been built in Mexico I'd swear they stuffed Hemi coils in there.
I've pieced together suspension components through the years.
I've got Kore VR's up front,Thuren King 2.5's and Lorenz mini-paks in the rear. Quite the mutt that manages to work quite well.
Don offers some Fox 2.0's with custom valving too.

I have Kore VR's up front and I also did a mini-pak in the rear...not sure if it was Kore or Lorenz...honestly, I don't recall.
Still have the Bilstein shocks I got from Kore. Need to replace those one of these days.

The Kore's are the stiffest in the biz and work well with the campers.
I had Don Thuren's for a trip to Utah, but they were way too soft a rate. Constant steering correction for 1800 miles. Don even tightened up the Kings.

Latest Mod: Fiamma F35 Pro

Had a rear awning installed on Saturday. Wow this thing is nice! We also Plan on adding a side awning.

Only issue is the door stop. The newer TC650's have a gas strut to hold the door open, but our 2002 has the old pin and socket type. With the legs mounted on the back wall of the camper, the door runs into the support LONG before getting to the socket. Anybody have an awesome solution?

Thanks!

Awning arm location

You could move the pin/socket to near the VIN info tag?? Or a better idea is to check out a post by NorthstarTC650-n-Tundra by zidaro post#51. he used the jack bracket.
just FYI=brian

Why not copy the factory: order a gas strut! I also noticed the new strut feature at Truck Camper Warehouse the other day, and it looks like everything else is the same (door, frame, etc), so the new strut should bolt right on to our older models.

BTW: what awning is that (make/model)?

doctorit - The door assembly is not the same as the new campers....the screen on the new ones is shorter and has a brush at the bottom to allow for the strut. I think the frame is different too.

The awning is a Fiamma F35 Pro.

Thanks!

brian90744 - Yeah, I have read Zidaro's thread at least twice and I asked the installer about mounting on / near the jacks before he did my install. He was against it for various reasons. The foot and corresponding bracket design of the F35 has changed since Zidaro posted his pics. I played with moving the mount yesterday, but I see some issues with getting the foot in / out of the bracket at the slight angle imposed by moving the brackets that far out. Thanks for the suggestion though.
