Now SOLD: Autohome Maggiolina roof tent

The day has finally arrived. After many years of travelling around the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa, we have settled into retirement in the Highlands of Scotland. Our 25-year-old Jeep Cherokee is still going reasonably strong. But reluctantly we have concluded that we will not again be using our Maggiolina roof tent. For the past few years it has been suspended from the rafters of our garage. It has to go.....

It's a long shot, posting a For Sale ad into this forum, as the tent is really only on offer to people in - or likely to visit - the UK. Ideally I'd like the buyer to collect; but I'm willing to discuss arrangements to deliver it to anywhere in Scotland or Northern England.

The roof tent has only been used in hot, dry, desert conditions, never in humid or damp climates, and only for short-ish trips. It's been dry-stored for the past few years in my garage. So it's clean, unmarked and in good shape: no cracks or damage to the fibreglass shell, and the fabric is sound.

The tent is an earlier model - see pics - with white fibreglass clamshell top and bottom, blue sidewalls, and the "gallery-style" bars on top to enable the storage of additional tyres and/or other equipment. It's a large-sized model, approx 2.1m long by 1.3m wide, and comes complete with original ladder, foam mattress and cranking-handle to open and close the tent. I've added a 12v striplight to the interior. Also on offer are the Thule roofbars and mounting-brackets, and my own pulley-system designed to lift the roof-tent off the vehicle and hang it from the (garage) rafters).

Price is negotiable within reason. New models are listed in the UK at around £2,800. I'd be looking for about half that amount ....

@vatsacom - bought new in about 1998/9 if I remember correctly, used until about 2003 and stored since then. Can deliver to Newcastle. Have replied to your PM with more details.

This is an Adventure model. No longer sold. while not as aerodynamic as the others, they are almost bomb proof and built to last.
I use to have a Large version of this model, the rail system up front was great for storing items like recovery boards, boxes etc.
Great tent and if this was in the US, I would be buying it.

Thanks DCH109.... you are spot on about this model being bomb-proof etc. And in the real world (as opposed to Formula 1) aerodynamics are not critical especially when the rooftent is mounted on a 4x4 which is almost as square as a brick! The gallery/rail system is a real advantage on long trips when extra tyres or other equipment have to be carried. It also gives you the option of loading the heavy items like extra fuel and water inside the vehicle to keep the centre of gravity low while putting lighter kit up top. I can't understand why none of the current Maggiolina models have this design.

The other good point about these rooftents is that the mechanical scissors-crank mechanism for raising and lowering the roof is solid and reliable. The gas struts which some other makers use are fine when they work - but they tend to lose pressure, and are less able to cope with strong winds. Another reason why the original Maggiolinas are still the best.

I have the Autohome Grand bought in 2016 and wished it had the gallery

Thanks to all who responded, commented or expressed an interest- including vatsacom and others.

Rooftent is now sold - to someone who lived in Scotland, wanted to fit it on to his Toyota HiLux, and was able to come and collect.

I was sad to see it go, but time and life moves on....
