OEM Toyota parts - and how to get'm cheaper at your dealer!

My '98 Taco is due for it's 90K service - water pump, timing belt, tensioner, hoses, belts, etc...

I gathered a list of parts and prices by searching the online catalogs from:

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214074

...and called my local dealer to see if they will match pricing.

After a few minutes of thought, I guess they decided that making a sale at 15% over cost is better than no sale

As an example, a 3.4L waterpump lists at $125.24, the web price is $86.58. That's a rather large difference...roughly 70% of list.

I wish all dealers were like that... mine just feeds me a line about shipping, duties and taxes even when the difference is hundreds of dollars. Some people still think we are living in 1995...

So far.....

I have been happy with www.rockauto.com

I just looked up a water pump for my 4Runner.

I see they have an Aisin OE water pump for only...... $54.79

I just had a new one put on my truck with my engine rebuild....about $65 bucks through my rebuilder.

That's great you got the dealer to help you out just by asking a simple question!

I've been going to the same guy for many years now and the pricing reflects that. But if you are a member of the TLCA, you get a discount at many dealers. The dealers around Denver generally give in the 20% range for Rising Sun members and most don't distinguish Rising Sun from TLCA. One thing that has worked for me is to go in and find a partsman you like, ask for him each time you come in and don't be stingy with the 6 packs. After a few times he will get to know you and you start getting better pricing.

The trademotion website looks like it is the Parts Dept. at Toyota of Dallas. If so, the boss man there is a bigshot on the Yotatech website and a great guy. I can't remember his handle, but if I think of it, I'll post it up.

I hate the dealer parts departments. They rape the customers.
The closest Toy dealer changes a good 20-50% more depending on the part then the dealer 6 miles down the road.
Power antenna mast at the close dealer is $46 and it was $34 at the other dealer.

Now here is one that will get you. TPS of my 4Runner the Close dealer asks $180 for it. Autozone sells the same exact part in a Wells Box for $80. When you take it out of the box it is a real deal ND with both the ND and Toyota trademarks.

Looks like that website would get about $74 but then add in shipping. Not a bad price at all for a dealer.

It pays to look around Thanks for the link

I dont mean to hi-jack a thread, but does anyone happen to know what the price of two OEM Toyota Struts cost for a 98 taco? 2.7 liter.

Nice post... I will have to give that a try next time I need something. Lately I have been using Toyota of Dallas and ordering parts via PM's on TTORA.

I wonder if the first guys even quoted the right thing? Toyota 89452-14050 is the TPS I have (mine is a 10/90 production). The list on that is $104.92 and I paid ~$76 last time I bought it. Even if your truck uses 89452-12040 or 89452-20050, the full list price should not be any higher than $104.92 right now. If you have a very early 22R-E and it uses the 89452-14040, the list on this is $56. In any case, using a TLCA or your local club discount should knock in the area of 15% to 25% off the price. It's pretty obvious that Toyota's pricing structure has a lot of room to work in. I can't stress the importance of loyalty, once a parts guy gets to recognize that you are a good, repeat customer, the pricing starts to reflect this.
