Off-Line Map Storage — iPad Storage Limits??

Some feedback from users PLEASE. I am looking at (3) topo map apps for my iPad3:
MotionX,
iHike, and
Topo Maps for Ipad

Each has the ability to download and store on one's device topo maps for use when you are out of cell and WiFi range — this is key to my usage, as this is where I am aiming to be most of the time.

I have a 64Gb iPad. My question is: what physical limitations are there on the number of maps one can download and store for these three apps? I am trying to determine BOTH hardware and software limitations!!

Two of the above app developers state a limit to the number of maps one can have downloaded [one says "200", another "up to 500"]. But, from their websites I cannot tell if this is a limit they have set in their software or they are describing a limit of my iPad's hardware?

One of my principal uses is while driving along on some road surface to quickly assess the fun and feasibility factors associated with making a right or left turn onto a less developed road or trail. So I need to have large numbers of 1:24K or 7.5min maps. [Right now, using MacGPSPro I have 74 GB of topos for the 12 western states that are available on my hard drive to the MacGPSPro application as I drive along; last summer in BC and the Yukon I had an additional ~20Gb on the hard drive.]

Using the USGS maps I have, an average state requires 2000-3000 maps for complete coverage, and I'd ideally like to have multiple states — even if I had to store them in iTunes and restore them as I need them.

Anybody tried downloading an entire state or two for any of the above apps? Help please!!

motion x is up to the limit of the ipad memory. Since you control how big each "map" is by your selection there is no way to know.

There is also a company that makes an iPad specific external hard drive that creates its own WiFi network. It is battery powered and has 500GB of storage. I saw it at my local Mac Superstore the other day. That should solve any hardware shortcomings. Not to mention give you lots of movies to watch too!

To add on to this, there are a few companies making these wifi external hard drives. Here is a link to just a few:

Best of luck in your searches....
