off road trailer questions - military vs. truck bed trailer

hello all,

looking for ideas on a trailer for this spring/summer. ideally i'd like to pickup something that isn't too much of a burden on my truck (1992 toyota 4WD, stock 3.0 3VZE). it would be used for camping and light trails and i would ultimately want to put an RTT on it and use it to carry our gear. during the rest of the year i would want to use to haul things (firewood, tools, etc).

so far i've looked at a few build threads for military trailers: M-416 trailers and some M-101s. from the dimensions i've been able to find on these, something like the M-416 would be a little undersized for my needs (width-wise) but ultimately doable and the M-101 would a little too wide. my truck is approx. 66" wide and i get the sense that the M-101 would be too wide and possibly too heavy. basically, while i want to maximize the cargo capacity (something about the size of my truck's bed), i don't want to completely kill my MPG (and engine) with something that is too much on the highway. any other ideas on military trailers?

i'm also considering finding a toyota truck frame with bed and making it into a trailer using other donor parts from the junkyard (there's a thread around here with a subaru rear end). it would be fairly easy to do the wiring for lights, it would have a decklid, the sizing issues would be resolved (same height, same width). from first hand experience i know how tough toyota beds are and there doesn't seem to be too much of a down side. i'm thinking of something like this:

truck bed trailer 1

any reason to favor military trailer over something like this?

anyhow, that's where i'm starting off on this, more questions than anything else right now. i'd appreciate people's inputs on my trailer project. thanks

Just a thought, you might want to look into Overland Trailers. The reason I suggest this unit, they will build the trailer to your specs and you can add the components as needed. Whether it is a RTT or a storage box system, there components can be purchased and added later.

they do make some nice trailers but they don't work for me because 1) this is going to be built on a grad student budget (i.e. cheap) and 2) buying it ready made takes all the fun out of it (imho). i like putting my tools to use and that's really reason #1 for this project and that's why i started looking into military trailers. anyhow, thanks for the recommendation, there's some good ideas on that site.
