Official Cooper STT thread

So I had started a thread that kind of died a while ago asking about people's experiences with the Cooper STT. I figured I'd try and get an official report thread going on them, as there doesn't seem to be one. The STT is a phenomenal tire IMO and I know many people running them, but little talk on forums. When posting, please state your tire size, and also an explanation of the terrain you use them in.

http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Truck/DISCOVERER-STT.aspx?tab=2

I hope that this thread will give positive feedback on real world accounts of the tire, their hold up, any problems, etc. Please chime in with your experiences.

I for one, run them on my old '78 Powerwagon (wife over my shoulder "ummmm you mean MY powerwagon" "Yes dear, your powerwagon.....") I get to use the truck for firewood and some hunting excursions, but mainly drive me DMAX now. They have worked outstanding on hard pack, forrest litter, wet rocks, think mud, and everything and anything else I can throw at them.
Tire size: 33 x 12.5 x 15

Post up reports and pics, and any info you want to share :coffeedrink:

I have about 1000 miles on mine now including 200 miles offroad and love them. Nice and quiet on the road and hooks up great in the mud and rocks!

Had them on my Jeep in a 285/75-16 and ran them in every kind of weather:

And I have them on my 2011 Power Wagon now in a 295/70-17. Just did my first rotation at 6K miles; still in love.

Hey Hilldweller, I was hoping you would chime in. I've got a set of 295/70/17's on order for my Dmax:wings: Should hopefully get them this weekend

So I originally ordered the cooper stt's in 295/70/17 for my duramax, until my buddy at the tire shop called me and said they're going to be about $340 a tire....puta madre. So I ordered the 285/70/17, which drop to about 250 a tire. I know I can probably get them a bit cheaper online, but there's something to be said for having a great friend owning a tire shop, I am a firm believer in buy local when ever possible. I'm keeping fingers crossed to have them in today, and on tonight, I'll post up pics when I do so

I buy local but I shop Treadepot online; the local Discount Tire matches the price.
Every now and then, Cooper runs a gift card promotion and Treadepot has free shipping. I got those tires for $260 each.

I've got a set of these in 33x12.5 r15 flavor on my Montero.

So far I am impressed. They work great in the snow, reasonably quiet on the pavement, and they look good ( I know.... an important feature). I do plan on having them siped. They are not bad on ice but could definitely be better. In 4 wheel they take off great from a standstill but lack stopping power (not surprising for a non-studded MT). Siping should help. They are however better at stopping than the BFG MT's.

I have only had a chance to test them out in winter conditions around the holidays. I will have to wait until the school year is finished and work is over until I get back to civilization to really put them through their paces. So far I really like them.

Just my opinion, but I think they are quieter than the BFG AT's i used to run.

So far a solid tire

It will be interesting to hear others reports and so how they hold up. Thanks for the thread.

Do you think the better winter performance is partly because, while it could use more, the Cooper STT does have some siping where the BFG MT doesn't have any? (The BFG has cut/flex points, but not sipes.)

I got a set of these on my 4runner after I couldnt get any 32x11.5r15 BFG AT/KO's apparently on natonwide backorder.

still havent gotten a chance to even wear off the little tire nipples on the tread. haha.. hopefully I can get some usage out of them.

285/70/17 on 2003 Duramax 2/4/2012

So my tires came in, and I got them on last night! A big difference over the 315 BFG ALT I had. On my hummer wheels, 8-1/2 wide approx, the tires sit at 32-1/2 inches tall. They have 18.5/32 tread depth and some excellent sidewall. I've put about 150 miles on them so far (shop to home, and home to work this morning). My mpg are comparable to when I had the michelin street tires on in a 265. I dropped from 19.2 to 18.8 so far. We'll see how that changes as the rubber compresses a bit. Road noise in conversation worthy. You can definitly hear it, but it's not any more noise than my duramax in the cab, and not much louder than the BGF's. For a reletively deep lugged mud terrain, these tires handle excellent. There is very little sway, and they track very true. Steering is still tight, and there is no wander at hwy speeds taking my hand off the wheel. I haven't braked hard yet, so won't comment on that until I experience it. Acceleration characteristics are great, you do notice a bit of slugishness, but compared to some mudders/boggers I've run, they respond much more like an all terrain than a true mudder. I took some pics at the gas station at 4:30 this morning so they are crap, but once the sun comes up, I'll get some better pics:

I will hopefully be headed to the ranch tomorrow for some pig hunting. I'll try and put them through some paces and will report.

That is a good possibility. The BFG MT I used to run were the older TA KM I believe. Not the new ones. They were/are an outstanding tire and i have no complaints. Like I have already stated they did seem to have a tendency to make the front end slide to the right when locked up on ice. My THEORY... (probably get my chops busted).... is that the inner tread blocks didnt grab enough when locked up and the outer block channeled the tire to the right. Like I said just a theory.

A friend of mine siped his BFG MT in 37" flavor on his Cummins Big Horn to reduce heat. He claims it improved every aspect of the tires ride.

Back to the STT... Yes, I do believe the little bit of siping already present on this tire might make it handle better compared to the alternatives. The difference in the interlocking center block design might make a difference as well. More edges should mean more traction. maybe..?

IMO siping equates to better tire to ground conformation as well as reduced heat build up.

Regardless, I like both but happen to have the Cooper's at the moment:)

Agreed. Glad you are liking them. These STTs were on my mind recently, but it will be a while before I try a set.

I'm happy so far...

Bad roads and inclement weather

So I still haven't gotten to put them through the test in the dirt yet. I have nearly 400 miles on the tires now. Road noise has actually seemed to decrease a hair. We had a storm come in last night, so I took the back roads to see how the tires reacted to fresh wet farm roads. Anyone who lives rural knows what I'm talking about. The first rain brings up A LOT of oil, there is always a lot of dirt on the roads which turns to mud as soon as the rain hits. I did a few hard brakes, quick starts, and hard turns. While the duramax obviously has no problem breaking them loose on wet asphault, the truck noticeable kept its composure. I hit the brakes hard enough to get the abs to kick in, and while not as great as my street tires were, the STT's definitely support the truck and promote confidence. They cornered fantastically and still responded to quick turns of the steering wheel under 40mph without sliding. I am very impressed so far. I also hit some deep (6+inches of water, enough to make you hydro or suck the steering wheel out of youer hands) at around 25-30 mph, the tires' high void kept me from lifting, and they didn't pull on the wheel too hard. Didn't get enough nerve though to hit one any faster.....If you have any questions please ask, I'll answere all that I have the experience to do so. Here's a couple pics of the rig with them in daylight. Again, these are 285/70/17's on Hummer H2 wheels. Tire psi = 45 front, 50 rear
