Oil Filter question.

I'm sure this has been gone over before, but I searched and couldn't find an answer.

So: Question: Are Fram Oil filters any good? Or should I just go to the stealership and get the Toyota parts. My Dad was at Baxter APS and was picking up a bunch of crap so I asked t him to grab me a few Oil filters. He got me Fram's "top of the line" filter but it seems to me that I've heard bad things about their products. This is a motor with 5k on it and I want to get another 295k at least out of it so I'm babying it and giving it nothing but the best. Is there a good non-toyota part that's worth considering?

Cheers

Personally I use the top line Fram and have had no issues with it. The key isn't necessarily the exact filter, but changing the oil and filter on a strong, set schedule.

Reminds me: I'm changing oil tomorrow!

Yeah I'm all about consistant maintanence, but since I put this motor in, 5K ago I had a freak timing chain break and I took it back in. Plus I took it in for it's 200 and 500 mile new motor checks so I haven't needed to change the oil yet. I just got smart ond headed over to Yotatech, and Fram get's a big thumbs down in general so i guess it's off the the Stealership for a big T oil filter.

I'm sure the Fram's won't kill your engine but I personally only use the Toyota filters.

Personally I think Fran's are fine.

However I use a filter in line with the grade of OIL. I am a big one for synthetics, or at the very least a good grade Oil.

For me if the oil is good I can extend service intervals, and with this in mind I would use a good filter.

So in summary, use good oil with a good filter, and extend service intervals. My prefered option.

If you are going to be dropping and changig super regular then to me it dosent matter cheap oil Fran filter.

I am sure there are some that will disagree, and thats fine. Its personal preferance and the above is mine!

I have heard of cases where Fram filters suffer from case failure. I use Mobil 1 extra capacity filters.

Ha, yeah I'm not implying that a Fram filter is going to make my motor blow up, I've just heard (and we all know what that's worth...) that Fram filters are just not up to snuff and that most folks prefer the toyota parts.

Cheers

Some interesting reading:
http://knizefamily.net/minimopar/oilfilterstudy.html

I do not use the std filter on my 22R or 22RE's. I use a Wix 51515 (or a Carquest equivalent since their filters say "made by Wix" right on the filter body), which is a Ford 5.0l application. It is a full quart sized filter rather than the OE ~1/3 quart size. If Wix made a PH977 equivalent filter (1.3-1.5 qts) and it would not run into things I'd be tempted to use those.
I used to use the Fram 5.0l application filter. Prior to reading the above and other posts on the topic of Fram filters I wondered why the engine always clattered for a while during cold starts. Since switching to the Wix filters it hasn't done this.

The dune buggy has a System One filter on it. I think that I'll probably move that to the FJ60 once the V8 is installed.

The Napa Gold 1515 are also good for Land Cruiser applications and are the Wix good filter with a Napa paint job. These are excellent filters according to the oil filter test page. I run them frequently when I'm out of Toy filters. In fact, 3 of my 4 Cruisers are running one right now!

Toyota also makes an upper line of filters.

90915-20004 is their best small filter-it's the preferred 80 series filter, but also fits Tacomas and FJC, hard to get in the USA without the right connections. I know for a fact that this filter also fits Sienna minivans :) even though it isn't the factory spec. My friend has a brand new Tacoma with the 4.0. The factory installed filter was the 90915-20004 even though the parts book does not show it as the replacement filter. What's strange there, is the truck is built in California.

15600-41010 is the traditional large Land Cruiser filter considered the standard by which the others are measured. It's heavily built (like a Land Cruiser) and expensive (Like a Land Cruiser). I mostly run these when I remember to keep them in stock. They are big in size and I don't know if they would fit the space in a Taco.

Any of the Toyota filters with YZZ in the part number are the lower priced oil filter line. Still perfectly good, though. Someone said they are made in Thailand, not Japan. I've never run one but I'm sure they are fine.

Frams have a poor reputation due to the cheap construction. I personally think there are better choices for not much more money.

This is correct.

The NAPA Gold, Carquest Premium, and Wix filters are all the same.

I've ordered from this company before. They have a good selection and good prices.

I can't make the link stay at the Toyota oil filter page.........just do a search there it's easy to find.

I've used Mahle oil filters in my Porsche 911 for 28 years+.

Rock auto has these (for only $2.52...I can't believe my eyes!) so I'm considering just ordering a dozen and not worry for a long while.

You could also do a search like this one. There are probably lots of studies like this.

X2 I only use Toyota Filters. Have had case failure by them coming apart in the past with fram.

I do change my own oil too (mobile 1 synthetic), so if something goes wrong, Toyota can't come back at me for not using a Toyota oil filter.

Thanks Guy's n Gals. There's alot of good info in these posts as usual. I saw Wicks at the shop as well, and if the full quart size fits in the engine bay I think I may run that 51515 as someone said because a little extra oil capacity would be nice.

Cheers and thanks a ton all, this board never fails to impress me.
