Oil useage normal?

1996 SR, 150k owner sayss uses mobil I, routinely changes oil at 4k. Highway driving mostly usually down half a quart.

I wouldn't even consider that oil usage. Even a brand new vehicle will use that much oil. For a 16-17 year old vehicle I think you are in great shape. I know that some vehicles like the Isuzu Trooper will go through 1-2 quarts every 1000 miles.

Plus there's that whole leaking valve seal issue. 1/2 quart per 4000 miles is not anywhere close what leaky seal would cause though. I'd say nothing to worry about, at all.

I was using nearly a quart per tank of gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ditch the mobile1 and either go with rotella synthetic or just use something like Castrol GTX. After about 3500 miles mobile1 will break down.... The junk is over rated. Plus, if you have any issues, such as the leaking seals, you'll burn more!

FWIW, I'll be using dino RotellaT 10w30 in my newly re-sealed 3.5L. It has a fair amount of detergents to keep things clean (clean is good) and is a nice quality oil. And is cheap! Otherwise, I've only (ALWAYS) heard good things about good old Castrol GTX.

Oh, and that ramble was in agreement with 4D55

I'd like you to substantiate this claim. I wouldn't say Mobil 1 is God sent but it's good quality oil. I've used it in all my cars/trucks for many years and hundreds of thousands of miles. I stick to manufacturer recommended intervals not 3000 miles silliness. Never had oil related problems between about dozen of vehicles I've owned new and old alike. The only real problem I've encountered ever was blown head gasket on LC. Others that perished never died of heart failure.

I can't back it up with any data, but found in the multiple vehicles that I've used M1, the oil level began dropping before 4000 miles... So, I stopped using it and began using dino oil again with no ill effects.

I'm one of those people who still looks under the hood while the gas is pumping... I blame it on my dad driving fords...
