I think tire selection in either size will be limited. I haven't searched very extensively but discount tire has two load range E tires and they are about $40 cheaper per tire in the 255/80r17 flavor.

Yep. I'm looking at the maxxis bighorn and they don't even make them in 255/80/17. But I'm still looking, who knows.
