one tale of a traveling iPhone

Here's the story of one tech blogger who got his iPhone unlocked so he could purchase short term data plans while traveling internationally. He visited Portugal and the UK.

That 3 UK sim and plan is one of the best deals in prepaid wireless data, not just in the UK, but it also includes the same unlimited data in 18 additional countries, including the US. They say they will throttle data speeds if you are consuming a lot of data, but I used several gb in the UK and nearly a gb in France with no problems last year. I also used who knows how much in the US when I got home. I forgot to switch back to my Verizon sim for a day and didn't realize it until I went to make a call the next day and it wouldn't let me dial a US number because I forgot the country code. The phone/texts are for calling/texting UK numbers only, but the unlimited data coupled with Skype was great.

I didn't know about the Three deal, that's awesome. We pretty much have been buying new sims when we enter the country. It's just part of the border crossing process now. Much cheaper than roaming, but the T-MOBILE international roaming option isn't bad, just slow. But sufficient for email and basic browsing.
