Opinions on choice between a Toyota Tundra doublecab or Tundra regular cab (5.7)

Hoping to draw on the combined overlanding knowledge of this forum to help me make a choice between the two vehicles for use in North America.

Assuming that both will be fitted with the same tires, suspension setup, ARB lockers front and rear, proper bumpers front and rear and all other needed overlanding gear, which would you choose and why? Vehicle setup is for 2 people only, travel in North America, focus on Baja Mexico. Not a daily driver.

Looking for pros and cons re:

1. wheelbase (regular cab is +- 20 inches shorter)
2. track width on trails (no heavy rock crawling planned)
3. resale value
4. Others?

I can never go back to a reg cab truck. I don't need the rear seats but the storage is priceless. Even with a camper shell its always nice to have stuff with you in the cab safe and dust free. Also resale on a double cab will always be much higher then a reg cab.

I also hate the window being right behind my head.....

For me, the only choice would be double cab, I can't get comfy in a regular cab, not enough room (6'3" 260lbs). Even if you're not a big fat guy like me, the extra room afforded by the double cab will be nice for storage and nice for the ability to recline the passenger seat and get some shut eye when not driving on long trips (assuming you will be switching off who's driving)! Also, it allows you to keep more stuff in the cab on long trips so it's not like- I want (whatever item) well, gonna hafta pull over and get it out of the back!

X2 on the additional cab space. My girlfriend drives a reg cabTaco and I had an Xtra Cab. After traveling in both, there is no doubt that the extra cab space is welcomed for many of the aforementioned reasons.

X2 on resale, too.

I have a crewmax and love the extra space in it. But some people would be impressed at how much room the reg cab has behind the seat, it is much more than others.

It really depends on the type off road trails you plan on using the truck. The short wheel base will provide a tighter turning radius and break over point. The longer wheel base will provide a better ride and increased dry/secure storage inside the cab.

I'm a big fan of the regular cab 8' bed truck....

Its big enough without being too big. Its pretty easy to turn around, if you don't mind a scratch and ding it goes off-road very well. The bed is long enough to sleep in WITH gear without too many issues. Its a bit smaller to park around town.

My ol' dodge is pretty limited on interior space, but you just have to work around it. On some of the new trucks, like a 3rd gen dodge, there is a LOT more room behind the seats. With buckets or the 40/20/40 seat you can store a LOT of stuff behind the rear seats! I think in the 3rd gen dodge regular cab you can fit a 5 gallon bucket without the seat being that far forward!

The regular cab truck is also going to be lighter overall. The running gear is the same as the larger trucks....so it buys you a bit of strength margin I think.

As long as you only have 2 people I would go regular cab every time....

The Tundra site is not letting me build a 4wd regcab Tundra. It seems that they had some awhile back in a Worktruck model?

I love my regcab and the essential 8' bed. We don't have kids nor pets though. We had a 1998 F-150 before and never used the rear seat. On the new Dodges you can store 5 gal. buckets back there so the window is a ways back now. I'm 6'3" and have to slide the seat forward to reach the pedals. Different story on my '98.5 CTD.

The tundra build site is not that great. Does not show all the options.......
Both the std as well as long bed are available in reg cab 4wd.

I used to be a reg. cab long-bed guy until 1996 when I purchased my F350. It's a long beast with a crew cab but I don't lack for space or capacity. The turning radius is a bit wide.

I would suggest a Double Cab for the inside space though I don't care for the looks. I prefer the appearance of the Crew Max but the beds are very short at 5.5-ft.

Here is a screaming deal on a NEW, simple, regular cab Tundra work truck for less than 27k. Somebody buy this and have it shipped to your door, install a pop-camper and travel.

Edit: truck no longer on dealer's site.

That's a good buy for this day and age.

Definitely have to avoid the hard sided campers though. I met a guy with a Tundra at Agua Caliente County Park with a modest 8' hard sided camper. He said mileage was terrible and the tranny was forever hunting. Handling coming down I-8 was a white knuckle affair also. He had Bilsteins and airbags. One thing I didn't check was if he was running the passenger tires they come standard with.

An AT or FWC would be ideal it would seem,and some LT tires.
