OT: Van Pricing

This is a little OT, but would like to hear thoughts / experiences

I've been half heartedly looking for "that perfect one" (van) for about a year and I'm sometimes a little shocked at listed prices for some vehicles.

I often see listings for 20-25 YO vehicles that languish for a while, then eventually drop off the radar- often accompanied by price chops along the way. I wonder if they actually sold or not.

My big question is: Experience being what it is here, are you guys / gals buying at close to asking prices? And I understand not many people would admit to it, but are you getting close to your asking prices when selling? I'm not talking about a thousand dollar difference, but more like a $35k ask with a $25k sale for example.

Just trying to see if my expectations are out of line.

I've yet to pay close to the asking price...
The most I've paid is $6k and the least was $1,500

Are you willing to do the work? I think the more work you are willing to put in, the less you will pay. However, when you take a $20k van and add $20k in accessories, most buyers are comfortable paying near the $40k mark because they know it will cost at least that much to get to that point. If the seller listed at $60k, it will sit forever or until they lower their price. Vans are one of the few vehicles I see where people get most of their accessory money back when selling. Sports cars on the other hand...

My 2c. You can never tell till you try. Trick is not turning off the seller with a low ball offer. Get a relationship going first. I was surprised to get a significant discount from a new car dealer. Is my van perfect? No. But......

From the perspective of a seller of different stuff... nothing pissed me off more than people calling me up and lowballing me before even seeing the 16x7 cargo trailer I was selling. Also telling me how they could go across the border and get a better price (on an inferior trailer). If they showed up in person I'd be more inclined to negotiate.

Buying stuff is easy for me, I know what I can afford to spend on that item, so I shop for things that are aprox 20% higher and hope the seller can meet my offer which isn't my max but usually purchase lower than my limit.
As for selling stuff I almost always get my asking price, even if it takes a little longer.
I am cheap lol.
