Outback Fuel Mileage on Oversize tires?

I have finally had it with the fuel cost on my Land Rover LR3 and have been lusting over my Moms Outback for the last year. If I find my way into one it would probobly be a 3.6 and I was wondering what people are getting for Fuel economy with 225/65R17 Tires.

Thanks!

The 225/65/17 tire is the stock tire size. Over on subaruoutback.org the biggest anyone goes is 245/65/17 because the wheel wells do not allow for any larger diameter. I have the 2.5 and I average 26 with 235/65/17 AT's, typically the 3.6's I see average 20-22 overall. I would think you could still expect 28 on the highway with the larger tires, just worse city performance.

I don't have larger tires on our 2016 Outback 3.6R, but we consistantly saw 26 MPG average for daily driving and 19 MPG when pulling a 13 foot Scamp camper (1900 lbs.) Last fall I put a James Baroud RTT on it for the winter because I had to place to store the tent. It knocked us down to 20.6 MPG average over four months.

I just removed the tent. If our MPG goes back up then fine. Otherwise I'm gonna have to whine to the dealer. Thought you would be interested in this since you are interested in a 3.6 and are on an overlanding forum.

I went up on tire size on my ‘07 2.5 to the largest that would fit and didn’t notice a significant change. I get 24 MPG heavily loaded, with a roof basket and spare tire on the roof, running 70-75 MPH. I’m pretty pleased with it.

Hello Guys, I was running a V8 Grand Cherokee with 35s and was getting 14.3mpg I'm in New Zealand and gas is NZ$8.20 or US$5.33 for a US gallon.
I now have a 3.0R Outback and get 24.6mpg so I think I have died and gone to heaven. But hook a trailer up to that outback and bang the same as the Jeep.
I do Like my Outback though as a Cheap runaround that will handle a roughish road. Cheers Leon
