I know this has been kicked around a couple times on this forum, so let's launch a thread to nail down some details. Is anyone interested in a bikepacking trip around the time of the Overland Expo which is May 18-20 in Flagstaff, AZ?
I have some ideas, considerations and questions for those who may want to participate. First, I'm thinking of a trip that would originate on-site at the Overland Expo and end in Prescott. This would be a route that goes through Sedona and over Mingus Mountain (Jerome) into Prescott. Temperatures should be really pleasant this time of year with a slight chance for warm temps through Sedona, but well under the mid 80s. That would make for pleasant nights.
We could do this in a number of ways. I could post the route and people could do it individually, in your own assembled groups, or as a larger group. I can tell you this much, I'll be doing this ride, so if anyone wants to join me, I'm super down with that. I'd also like to gauge interest so we can investigate options for shuttles back to the Overland Expo grounds on the 21st (monday). By the way, this would be a one-nighter ride for most. I suppose some may opt to do it in two nights, but that seems unnecessary.
I have some ancillary ideas to toss on the table: If we leave very early on Sunday (20th), the last day of the OvExpo, that puts us in Prescott late mid to late afternoon on Monday. Some riders could find hotel accommodations in Jerome, which puts you squarely in the soft and wimpy category, or allow for a nice camp on Mingus. The next day would be a semi boring gravel road/pavement jaunt into Prescott, with the possibility for some fun diversions I suppose. The last section of trail ends about a half mile from the Overland Journal office, so that's pretty cool.
I have researched the route. It's largely singletrack and gravel road. It is awesomely scenic. I will say, it's a funky blend of boonies and coffee shops if you fold in some fun Sedona riding.
Okay....So who's interested?
