A couple of months ago on a Sunday Rupert was riding into Peru from Bolivia when his chain broke and destroyed his rear hub. With the help of some locals who stopped to help he dragged the bike into a small farm. He picked up as many pieces of the hub as he could find and took the wheel into the nearest town, Juliaca, Peru. With the help of many referrals from locals he found a local machine shop. The guy there attempted to weld up the remaining pieces of the hub but was unsuccessful. He then went and found a piece of aluminum billet (on a Sunday) and turned it on his lathe. He drilled out the axle by hand and worked everything until it was a perfect fit. He drove Rupert to a hotel where he could stay for the night and picked him up the next morning. He finished the hub on Monday morning and apologized for charging the equivalent of $45 USD, explaining the cost was so high because he had to buy the billet. [editor's note: This experience reflects our own experiences all over the world. The people of the world are generally welcoming, friendly, helpful and go above and beyond to help people in need.]
