Pacific Northwest M101a2 Build Project

Starting a build thread on the M101a2 I picked up last month from Gov Liquidation for $440 (yes, it ended up cost more, they need to eat too) - $540 off the lot.

The primary purpose of this trailer is to take on weekend and longer trips around the Pacific Northwest. My family has outgrown my Toyota Tacoma short bed and we now require more s&$t than I care to take with me, but that's what trailers are for, right?
Since we both work full time, we have found it hard to pack up and head out of town quickly and painlessly (usually ends in pre-trip drama that shadows the whole trip). My hope is I can create a self contained RV-like camper (I despise oversized massive RV's and will never own one). We are happy to sleep in a tent on the ground becuase we want to be in the same tent as our very young children, so no roof tent needed for us. But I would like to add a gas cooktop, water tank with pump, potty for the kids (I'm fine with a pit latrine ................ my wife and I served together as Peace Corps volunteers for three years in an indigenous village in Panama and I subsequently spent many years as a watershed restoration manager in Hawaii so logged lots of time sweating in tropical forests).

The idea is to have most stuff packed up in action packers ready to go. I also want to create a lid for it so I can store it outside in the seattle rain.

The good news for me is my cousin is a steelworker and a big 4x4 enthusiast - he has an amazing rockcrawler and likes to modify vehicles. So I have ready willing professional welding help close by.

Ill post pics as I go, but to start with I have done some generic things - such as replace the surge brake and lunnette ring with an adjustable channel (thank you to Mark Harley and Koolex11 for the ideas and pics). I also stripped a ton of crap off it - these things are way overbuilt. I want to weigh it now becuase you cant even notice it behind the Tacoma empty. Of course that is after I took off the cover, bows, wood stake sides, surge break, chains, etc....

Anyone know someone who wants a cavas, bows, and sides for cheap or trade?

Here is what it looked like when I picked it up:

I will try to post some pics next of what it looks like after cleaning it up.

I think I am going to take it to the king county transfer station (fancy seattle term for....DUMP) and see if they will weigh it for me when they are at a low visitor volume.

She is a clean one, Not much prep work to color match her to your tow rig.
Sell the unwanted items on craigslist or ebay to fund some toys.
will you be changing out the axle to a 6 bolt t match?
Keep us posted on the progress,

I got bit by the 101A2 bug and it is fun!

If that doesnt work let me knowv I know where there is a scale down by the west seattle bridge that is just sitting next to a building. I've driven on it many times, but never tried to drop a trailer on it, but im sure you could pop your head in and ask or just go for it. I've never seen anyone actually using it.

Looks like a nice trailer. Pretty rust-free. 4" frame? Anything bent or broken?

Hardly any surface rust. Nothing bent or broken. Going to order my replacement axle - 3500# with 10" electric drum brake and 6 on 5.5 hub. Also need to have my cousin help me fab up a new shock mount from a generic axle spring perch. Looking forward to that swap out. Then new LED tailights ( standard trailer lights bolt right up -im going to use basic LED lights from Harbor Freight since there is one locally). Replacing entire wiring harness with newone.

Other mods on the short list:

New drop leg jackstand welded to tongue triangle

Trailer box on tongue triangle

Wheelers Offroad 16" steel wheels with 4.5 backspacing and 6 on 5.5 lugcentric pattern

33x12" tires (probably used)

Reverse lights wired to dash switch

That should keep me busy for a while!

Bed was painted with rustoleum metal primer and overcoated with 3 coats rustoleum truck bed liner. Body and trailer box walls painted with rustoleum metal primer and rustoleum gloss black overcoat (rattle can). Still working on painting undercarriage. Love the bedliner. Hard surfaced with texture!

Looks great! That underside is no fun, but it feels good when it's done! Nice reinforcement on the channel.

I like the progress, I took my trailer to the local scrap / recycling yard.
Dropped it from the truck on the scales and told them needed a certified weight for loads to the recycler.
They gave me a printed weigh out with thier letter head.

More than I needed but I was on and off in 5 minutes.
There are still many good guys out there.

I like the tongue channel looks great. how easy is the landing gear to work?

They had no problem weighing my old Mustang years ago. Rather than dropping your trailer on the scale, you might have to drive on with the truck first, then go hook up, and drive though again. Good luck and nice find!

Landing gear works great. We took it apart and greased it so it slides nice. Just got done scrubbing the undercarriage with a scrubbrush, green scrubber and a gallon of simple green detergent. Sparkleing clean now! I plan to brush and roll rustoleum metal primer all over the bottom tmrw.

Then the real fun can start after the base is done.

Also, what measurements are people getting for the axle? I measured from brake drum face to brake drum face and got 63 1/4". By brakebdrum face I mean the flat part of the drum where the wheel is mounted to.

I also measured from spring perch center to spring perch center and got 43 1/4".

How does this compare? Will a 65" axle work?

***Update: Ordered 63" 3,500# axle with 10" trailer brake. Based on measurements with wheel backspacing and tire width , it should fit just right at full articulation.

Thanks! I copied your fine example!
