Painting a harness bar

I just received my harness bar and I finally got the paperwork and tape off it. I am wondering what I need to clean the bare metal with so that the paint willl adhere properly? I have cleaned it with sandpaper, steelwool and alcohol, need I use another cleaner and does anyone know if I should prime this?

Yes you should prime bare metal. What kind of metal is it? What kind of primer will be determined by the type of metal it is and the topcoat you intend to use. Do you have a picture of the harness.

I intend to paint the bar with a semi gloss spray, I have no idea what type of metal it is, I bought it online and it came bare. I do not know how to add the site to this posting but if you would like I can give you the site.
