Pajero 2.8TD owners...approx km/miles on tank of gas?

Hey everybody, I'm looking at importing a 92-94 Pajero Exceed 2.8TD and I've searched the net trying to gather as many answers as I can to my questions.

I am looking at the 2.8L Turbo Diesel engine, but I've read that some people get 300-350km on half a tank.

Now I do realize it's an older engine, but I thought a full tank of gas on a Diesel should be around 800-1000km

Just wondering what some of you are getting, and if there is a way to improve it besides doing a engine rebuild.

Thank you

Here are some hard numbers for you on a 4M40 2.8TDi, with boost upped to 12 psi.

The LWB has a 92L tank. Over the last year, in mixed city/hwy, on 31s winter time, and 33x1050 bfg muds summertime, I'm averaging just under 12L/100km. Sometimes as good as 11.4, or as bad as 13 (winter time, longer idle times etc), but in 50k kms, my average is right around 11.9L/100kms. 92/12 is around 760 kms. I've done better, esp if I keep the speed down around 105km/h. I had the injectors done last summer, and my avg has been improving since.

The 2.5 diesel did slightly better, with an average of 10.8 over two+ years of ownership. This was in the shorty though, which was lighter and a smaller tank too.

In terms of improvements.... well, it's a large, heavy SUV, with the aerodynamics of a brick... The 2.8 has massive running gear to haul around as well. I'm getting approx what it was rated from the factory. Apparently water/alcohol injection can improve fuel econ, but I haven't tried it (yet). I'm getting better mileage than my Nissan and Toyo buddies, similarly equipped in their gassers. Maybe swap the flanges for manual hubs...

Hope this helps?

Phil
