Hey Guys

Since installing my AUX tank i have gotten a decent amount of emails asking it the setup will effect passing CA smog.

Well, i just got back from the smog station and passed with flying colors.

The tester even joked that the state should pay me to drive this rig its so clean! HA!

Anyone, thought i would pass that along for anyone interested/curious!

Carry On

Did they not do a close visual inspection? Assuming your setup is well-sealed, it shouldn't affect the emissions gear, right? I always assumed these tanks would just not pass visual in CA, like some cold-air intakes and such.

Oh yeah, kind of to the point of silly

I think being retardly anal about using all OEM parts for a factory fit and finish paid off, it truly does look like it came like that.

I was nervous when he was poking around, but didnt even bat an eye about it.

Ha! As far as i know, it was never a factory option in the taco so it would require way more work and skill then i have! :D

I hear ya. The 21 gallon tank on the Tacos is silly. All of these truck/SUV rigs should have at least 30 gallons' capacity.

Problem is.... 99% of them just drive to the mall.. so they dont need that fuel cap. So the manuf. says... why install a larger unit?

Mine passed as well, back in...May (i think)

HOWEVER...Mine almost failed because, and I know Kevin's has this and mine doesn't, my filler does not have the little 'dohickey' that holds the gas nozzle in when filling. I was told that next time...

Just something for people to watch out for.

It's to prevent you from putting a leaded gasoline nozzle (wide diameter) in your tank instead of the unleaded nozzle (narrow diameter). Not sure where you'd find a pump turning out leaded gasoline, tho...and really dumb when you consider you can go to Autozone and get an additive for engines which require leaded gas (like Pinzies).

They don't care how dirty it is, as long as it conforms to the laws on the books. Good to hear your clean-burner passed the test!

I didn't know this was such an issue. What is the premise behind it not passing smog other than you changed to an after market part?

Visual Aspect, and the vapor containment system i think, not really sure actually! :D

That's correct. The real reason is environment and safety--because AUX tanks usually don't have the same safety features (expansion chambers and valving) as OEM tanks, nor the same connections to the emissions hardware. Most people don't go so far as to duplicate OEM features, so the law assumes nobody will, and they assume that if there's an aftermarket tank, that it won't be done correctly. Without a detailed inspection by a mechanic who understands the entire system as it should work, there's no way to tell if it's done correctly, so they take the easy route and say if it's modified it's not gonna pass.

And this makes me so glad that all they do is plug into the OBD port in Virginia...:D As long as there are no codes that will trigger the MIL, most of the readiness monitors (VA allows for two to be "not ready), and the fuel cap passes the pressure test, the truck passes.

You people complaining about "just" 20 gallons make me and my 14gal Isuzu sick. Luckily, once I install the 20gal from the Rodeo and the two jerry cans I'll have (lesse, 14+20+5+5)... 4 gazillion gallons! And it all has legit CARB stuff because it is legit CARB stuff... score!
