Since we Americans can't get the crew cab FGs here, I plan to make one for my future FG. I've seen a few photos on here and have also been looking at pickup sleeper cabs for design ideas. There have been a few other threads where passenger cabs made an appearance but they're either old threads or just weren't on topic.
This will serve as seating for my little son and also storage if and when I take the camper off, as I plan to make it removable from the truck.
I was thinking a 2"x2" tube frame with a 1-1.5" laminated foam exterior and aluminum corners similar to Westyss' build (as well as others). The tube would act as a roll cage. In between the tubing I could add more insulation and then line the inside with upholstery.
I'd like it to have a pass-through to the cab and also a pass-through to the camper shell so there may be only enough room for two seats. My son is still in a car seat and faces rearward. My wife is adamant (as am I) about keeping him facing rearwards until old/heavy enough to be in a front-facing car seat/booster seat.
I'm debating frame mounting ideas. I'm not sure if I'll need a subframe. If not I'll just mount the cab on the frame via spring mounts as has been discussed at length here. I'm guessing it would be 200-300 pounds max. The camper subframe could then start aft of the cab. Or...if best, the subframe could be the entire length of the bed and the cab would sit on the forward portion. The subframe could then act as a pickup bed for when I need to haul stuff.
I may also have to raise the floor a bit, at least in the center, to clear the engine and tranny, as well as leave enough room to put in some heat shielding, etc. That all depends on how far any frame or mounting brackets raise the floor off the frame. I'd either make or use RV doors and windows. Probably a window on the passenger side and door on the driver's side.
Anyway...I'm mostly just thinking out loud but would like some ideas, input, etc. from anyone who may also have the same crazy ideas as me.
Thanks!
