now this works but it is the smartest idea? Thoughts and input?

As long as the mount is designed and built properly, then there is nothing wrong with it. There is a winch mount made for Xterra's that goes behind the factory bumper cover in a similar way.

If it is mounted to the factory bumper, that's a very bad idea.

That bit of steel is substantial enough for light stuff or very low speed impacts, but anything beyond that and it will fold like a cheap lawn chair. It's not strong enough to handle those kinds of forces. Go with a cradle that bolts to the frame. That's a very strong way to do it and looks nice and clean as well.

Many people have taken the universal winch trays and simply bolted them up between the frame using custom brackets and trimmed the bumper/fascia accordingly, been going on for years on many different rigs, a bit of googling will show you many proven setups. Much better approach angle and cheaper than most aftermarket bumpers.

I recently had a WARN ZEON 10 Platinum mounted behind the factory bumper of my 2009 Nissan Patrol....not everyone needs a heavy bull bar so this worked out well for me.
The flip-up number plate adds a the finishing touch to the discreet mounted winch that I was looking for.
